I have an academia question, that I'm assuming someone can help me with. OK, I know "Emeritus" behind a professor's name means they aren't teaching anymore, right? But then if they have an office at the school, does that mean they're still there/affiliated, doing research?

Emeritus just means they’re retired with honors. Often they still teach an occasional class and, yes, do research and have an office and are affiliated (Professor Emeritus, University of the Swamp).

Is there a reason you ask? If you want to study with an emeritus, that is unlikely, depending on how much they want to be involved with students.
Thanks for this!

Asking because I talked to the program director today for a bit (half hour, actually), and he said he'd put me in touch with two faculty members whose interests align with mine. But one is an emeritus, so I was a bit confused after looking her up.

Though apparently, the way they do it at this school is you're not just assigned to one mentor the whole time--you work with a few different people, then pick the main one.

My dad is an emeritus: he still does a lot with grad students. He guides them in choosing research, helps them find/write grants, checks in with them as their projects unfold, generally mentors them. That is the part of being a professor that he most loved, so that is what he does now. He goes into his office almost every week day that he is home (he also travels a lot for fun).
Thanks for this!

I forgot I was giving a talk at a retirement community today. There went the plan to stay in bed all day.

At least it's the place that puts up event parking signs for talks, so that's good for my ego.Couch 155: The International Operator

I managed to not cry for two whole days, but yesterday I cried during group and today I'm crying at my desk at work. I miss my T. I miss having a safe, warm sofa to sit on and talk and cry. This week is going to be so long.

i doubt it will resolve itself. blood in urine has always meant kidney stones for me, but i think usually can be a UTI as well. either way, if there is pain too...i'd go to the urgent care type place. is the wait really 4 hours!?
Thanks for this!

Sounds kind of exciting - good for you to be an event.

We have a whole batch of retired faculty -they live on the emeriti wing - mostly men - who come in every day and still work with students. I think for some of them (most of them are men) - they need something to do, their wives don't want them hanging around the house all day, and it is hard to give up adulation and interaction with students.

The closer my husband's next court date gets, the more anxious I'm finding myself getting. This not knowing what's coming is getting unbearable. I just wish someone would call me and tell me what's going on.

Do you have a contact at the police department you could talk to maybe? At least to get an update? Hugs...

If the first Mr. Mess and I were still together, today would be our 25th anniversary. When did I get so old? I was just shy of my 19th birthday then!

I want to be a professor Demeritus

All my kids were so good today. This is my second year of secretly ditching the approved curriculum entirely because it's the worst possible way to teach, treats the kids like they're dumb and incapable-- they end up unable to play or read at all even after two or three years and drop out. Last year's crop is still doing great across the board, 100% reenrollment, I make them work very hard one-on-one and they love it. I wish I hadn't wasted four years trying to make the old system function. And I wish things would actually change if I bothered to tell the school that their system blows monkey chunks, but I know they wouldn't.

If we’re discussing favorite school songs, which I’m not sure we are, I am partial to UT-Austin’s “Eyes of Texas,” till Gabriel blows his horn!

Also “Hail to the Victors Valiant.”

And don’t forget, I’m an Event.

The owl onesie isn’t for Events, it’s for Occasions.

I used to have this problem on heavy teaching days. I fixed it by speaking from the chest/diaphragm, if that makes sense? Not vocal fry, but a similar idea—go to the lowest register your voice can naturally achieve.

That sounds like the thing to try next Monday/Tues. By the fourth hour I'm complete toast. Every year I say I'll figure it out and I never do.

But for now I will self-medicate with hot cocoa. Dairy is great for your voice....... right????
