I've been looking into finding a new therapist and am considering finding one that uses EMDR. My current t specializes in CBT but I'm finding her one size fits all approach not helpful with all the issues I have. Has anyone had positive experiences with EMDR?

I have been doing emdr for about 2 years now. I know many people who have used it successfully. For me it is slow going. My T says that the more trauma you had at a young age, the longer it will take. It also doesn't help that I have DID and I dissociate alot. T says that EMDR processing stops when I dissocuate so we have to go slow and stop to bring me back and ground me whenever I go down the hole. Also it doesn't help that my memories of trauma are locked in different parts of me. So it is slow but I have seen progress.

It is definitely worth a try and should be successful relatively quickly unless you have issues like I do. Even so, there is still hope that it will work, just slower. You also want to be sure that you are seeing someone fully trained, especially if you tend to dissociate.

I've heard emdr is helpful for trauma. You may also try humanist approach, somatic experiencing and mindfulness.
I find combination of "normal talk therapy" as well as physical exercise and creativity most effective. Trauma is both psychological and physical injury. It needs to be addressed on all levels of mind and body.

I tried EMDR with my therapist for a few weeks. He himself said that it's not something he enjoys doing with clients but he was willing to try it with me when I requested it. I felt like it was helping a little, but we ended up abandoning it. I don't think my therapist was fully invested in EMDR and I wish he had pushed me more during the process. I think if I could try it with someone who actually was enthusiastic about it and knew how to guide me through it better that it would have been extremely helpful.

Mt T absoltely loves EMDR. He is a trauma specialist and says he has seen it help so many people. He is also fully trained so yes that is very important.
