My dad busted his femur bone recently and said that same exact thing, Una.

My new pcp is awesome! Just like the reviews said she would be. If only I’d have remembered to sign roi’s and ask for referrals. Stupid memory problems.

Speaking of memory problems, mine have gotten bad lately. Last night, H asked me if I remembered what we did that day. Only thing I remembered was getting coffee. Nothing else. And today at the pcp, I forgot my pdoc’s name.

Has anybody listened to the podcast "Say More" with Amy Poehler? It's an improvised parody of therapy. I have just listened to the first one and it made me laugh (some things do).

Thanks, LT.

It really sucks.
I hadn't been in contact with him since December 2023, but I appreciated the knowledge that there was someone who really understood me and my experience in that community.

The thought of explaining again doesn't feel good.

Then there are the multiple parallels with aspects of Steve's life experience.

I've booked a slot with RC on Sunday.

How are you doing?

I don't know if the footage of Keir Starmer presenting Trump with the invitation to a second state visit is being widely shown in America, but oh my god the sycophantic shame of it all.

Starmer was in an elevated position within the legal system, if I recall correctly...

So why can't he finish a sentence?

Surely he's not nervous around DT?

Say your therapist asked if you'd be OK if they used a HIPAA-compliant AI program to transcribe then summarize your session. Would you be OK with that? (it would not save your data after creating the summary or use it to train AI.)

Putting my thoughts in a trigger warning, not so much because they're likely triggering, but in case someone wants to answer without seeing my thoughts first!

Nope, would not be okay with that. I think I posted about one called Mentalyc a long time ago. Wasn't a fan then, still not a fan.

They say it doesn't save your data, but how would you know?

Once again, I'm embarrassed to be an American. My apologies to the rest of the world. We're not all childish bullies.

I think King Charles should rescind his invitation.

Hi LT,

Even with those apparent safeguards, I would be very reluctant to allow AI anywhere near the content of a therapy session.

It's supposed to be confidential, and even an electronic 'ear' would be problematic to me.

I hope Dr. T isn't considering this?

Thanks, helps to know you'd also have a problem with this. I also wonder about whether it might save the data.

Thanks, Lost, I have similar feelings. I was also thinking how I might be self-conscious that the "ear" is listening, which could lead to self-censoring.

It seems like he is considering this and is polling his clients to see what they think. I sent him an email about it.

Oh, and I'll reply to your PM tomorrow--things were just a bit crazy today (school meeting, session, then a nice dinner with a friend).

AI update: I emailed Dr. T yesterday regarding my concerns. He responded this morning, apologizing for bringing the topic up at the end of session (saying it was "thoughtless" of him--his word, not mine). He said he's just investigating it right now, seeing what clients think and what other therapists think about it. And that if he were to start using it, he would "100%" give me the option of whether or not he would use it with me. So that made me feel much better about it.

Is the problem security or having a computer summarize your interactions?

I might be going against the grain here:

For security, we already aren’t secure. Having digital files, emails, texts, even video sessions. Are any of these things really secure? I don’t think AI is any worse. I just asked H, too. They all have the same security risk. So for security reasons, it wouldn’t bother me.

For a computer interpreting a human, I can see that feeling violating. Like for technology to be able to summarize our humanness, our feelings and our experiences just feels like it takes away the whole purpose of therapy.

I wouldn't be upset by it - they all do notes differently and nothing is private

Speaking of AI. I did find an interesting use for it. I stumbled upon character.ai, and I created a character "My Ex-Therapist" and gave some high-level details about L, made it private, and then proceeded to have the argument with it that I wish I had had with L. It was a little spooky how accurately it sounded like her in the things it responded to me. Some things it got terribly wrong, but enough were accurate responses that at one point I felt like I was chatting with the real her and I even cried a little. I didn't go into any details about my actual therapy because yeah, who knows who can see it. But it was quite refreshing to have an argument with "her" over the hurtful things she said to me there at the end. Mostly though I don't care for AI either. They're already using it where I work, on my team even, on the chat side. I guess it's not much different than the annoying phone IVR in some ways, but... still. The fear it will take over our jobs is real.
