What are some therapeutic activites that you do with your therapist?

What are some you do on your own time for "self therapy"?

My therapist and I are going to be making dreamcatchers next week. Due to my many nightmares, I thought this would be something therapeutic and distracting so that maybe it would help me open up some more.

For self therapy, I am doing an illustration book on my trauma and healing experiences. I am writing and my artistic alter is doing the drawings. It's only 4 pages so far, but we hope by next week to have a good chunk of it done to show our therapist.

It got me wondering, what do the rest of the members on psychcentral do for themselves other then the straightforward therapeutic approach (talk, EMDR, etc)?

Well, I paint sometimes with watercolors and try to capture images of things that bother or haunt me. And I use beeswax to model while I am in T's office during talk. I also use colored pencils while I am there and I sketch or just color.

I go to yoga--it's an important part of my healing and I also listen to guided imagery meditation. I have also used a bat in T's office to whack a padded table. He's into somatic psychotherapy as well as talk.

Sometimes I draw with colored pencils in therapy. Sometimes we do a mindfulness exercise. He puts on a tape of this expert in minfulness that he knows, who teaches in the city-- and he helps me to regulate while I do it, since I have a lot of trouble with that. Sometimes he brings in a quote or a passage that we read together and discuss. A lot of the "activities" are centered around my own creations-- poetry, journals, emails, or art that I give to him.

Well, I definitely need to do more of this. Unfortunately, my SI has taken over a lot of what I should be doing. When I am up to it, I write and write and write-- poetry, journals, articles. I enjoy creating abstract art. I have started to meditate and I am going to start yoga this weekend. None of the things that I do are random-- for example, if I do art, I don't paint a bowl of fruit-- or if I write a poem, it is not about a political issue-- everything that I create comes from within and I use it as a medium to allow my unconscious to speak.

Hey... isn't BelleRuth Naperstak from your city? Is that the tape you work with?

"for example, if I do art, I don't paint a bowl of fruit-- or if I write a poem, it is not about a political issue-- everything that I create comes from within and I use it as a medium to allow my unconscious to speak. "

Same here.... i try to let things come about that will aid in healing.
