I'm pretty sure I've got more going on with me psychologically than my therapists capable of dealing with. She's still working under a licensed professional. So far we've only been talking about the past and how it affects the present and something about my inner child......
I'm pretty sure I've got more things to worry about than whether or not my inner child is getting enough attention... For instance, if I might possibly have Borderline Personality Disorder or PTSD....I just dont' think she's qualified enough. However, she is a really good listener and she is starting to get a better understanding of what I've been dealing with. But we're just not taking a medical approach to everything. I'm going to talk to my family doctor next week and ask him what I should do...my current therapist doesn't handle medications, so he's been doing it for me. I just don't know what to do....like always. advice? |

How long have you been going to her?
Have you discussed with her how she understands the problem? Maybe then you will feel more clear on whether or not she is the person for you to see. Have you consulted a psychiatrist on your meds? If the problem is indeed PTSD or something of that ilk, a psychiatrist might know a bit more about how to manage the symptoms. |

I've been seeing her for about a month and half or so, just once a week.
She uses humanistic, eclectic approach or something like that. I feel comfortable talking to her, but I just don't think she's had enough experience to help someone like me...she doesn't even prescribe medications. I've been using my family doctor for that. I'm almost positive I've got Borderline Personality Disorder or at the very least PTSD. I don't want to sound like I'm self diagnosing, but I know my body better than any doctor, especially with what I've dealt with over the years. All the symptoms line up and point directly to Borderline P. D..... |

Hang in there, you're just beginning
![]() It can seem like a slow process sometimes and especially at first. I hardly spoke to my therapist for the first 9 months. I read a lot though and after talking for a few months I asked if she thought Borderline applied. She did. Borderline is very much related to our development so if she's talking about that it could be she is still determining what your childhood development was like. Anyway, talk to her about all this. That's really important to tell her how you feel about everything including therapy, her, disliking talking about the inner child, anything at all. ![]() |

![]() If you wish to discuss something else, say so. Why not talk about your symptoms and what she reports as your dx to the insurance company or for the record? That might shed some light on why she feels allowing your "inner child" (we all have one you know) to have a "voice." Therapy can be quite slow... keeps from digging up ovewhelming material too quickly. TC

I agree with Echoes. Talk to your T about how you are feeling. Don't worry about her experience right now. Since she is being supervised you are likely going to be getting good care.
Tell her you think you need to be refered to a Psychiatrist. She should have several that she works with. PTSD and BP probably should not be managed by a family physician. Good luck and let us know how things are.
