A friend who recently had a baby was discussing similar cases with me. She said her pediatrician recommended that they keep a stuffed animal in the baby seat, and when baby is in the seat, they put the animal in the front passenger seat. This is because if baby is asleep, it can be so easy to get lost in the routine of the day and forget, especially if one parent is not used to dropping baby off.
