Sorry....just have to vent my frustration. And I know how some of you feel about Facebook. I swear it is nothing more than "Snitch Software" as I said in the title. The way it functions, it tells way more about yourself than what you simply type on your page. If someone sends you a private message on Facebook.....it's NOT private! Because it automatically records and posts to the person who sent you the message the exact time, down to the minutes, that you read their message. And others (if it's a group message) can see that you've seen the message and when you saw it. The chat bar is another feature that "tells" on you. Can't tell you how many times I've been hiding out from annoying people only to log onto Facebook and have the green light on the chat bar light up next to my name showing I'm online.....then immediately my phone rings and it's the stalkers on my page calling since they saw I was online. And I won't even get started on how businesses rip off valuable marketing info on you just by stalking Facebook. Grrrrrr!!!! But I feel that that's the way the world rolls now. If you're not on Facebook, you miss out. It's indeed a "Brave New World".........and I hate it!!

Dont' get me wrong, I'm no big fan of fb but I have to say if you think that you're missing out on something if you're not on fb you are very wrong. The only thing fb does for me is let me see artists that I like and game posts and such because that is all I use it for. I don't use it to keep in touch with friends, I don't want to see people's lives and play by play of their days. I just don't follow them so I don't se it and only friends that I allow see my status updates because I never post to public either. It's still pretty non-private so I don't expect that but you have some control over it. The problem here with your "stalker" friends is that they are, as you imply, annoying and stalkerish. It's not really the site's fault but how people do that to you that is. Simple thing. block the people you don't want to see when you're online, opt out of having your status show by turning off the chat messaging software or filtering it so only the people you want to know can see it. |

I am not on Facebook, Twitter or any social media site other than this one.
Not being glued to my phone or iPad means I can enjoy the world around me, live in the moment, have authentic conversations with real people, listen to the silence, not have tension headaches or sleep problems, I've got a good attention span, I don't feel that my life has ended if my battery runs out and I don't care if anyone thinks I'm missing out or am old fashioned or boring because I'm happy this way. |

The Webgoji does not do social media.
I did have an FB that's been deactivated for ... years? I pimped a lot of my writing on there and even had a meme series called Inappropriate Creeper (a Minecraft Creeper caught in compromising situations :P). All my "friends" kept saying I should post my short stories to a blog or on Facebook. But my writing blog actually posted to my FB account, they just weren't reading it. Throw in ex-boyfriend drama from my wife's account and BAM!, no more social media. D-U-N, done.

The thing with facebook is it has a myriad of settings and you can pretty strictly control who does and does not see what you post, but that's time consuming and involving to do so lots of people don't realise they can. Worth setting aside some time to figure it out if you're going to continue using it. I think it's a useful tool, I use it for 'groups' and organise social/sports arrangements, so much easier than emailing or phoning large numbers of people. However the OP is very right - nothing posted there should ever be regarded as 'private' as there is too much chance it will become public. |
