I have issues with my boyfriend. We met in 1999 and dated for 4 years. We broke up for 3 years and have been back together for about a year.

We've been talking about getting married for the past few months. He picked out and put a deposit on an engagement ring and has been paying it off...

But he hasn't formally proposed. We have a tentative date, he actually bugged me to show him some wedding dresses that I like, and we've looked at places for a reception.

When I asked him if I should tell people we are engaged, he said no, we are not. But he also said it's just about the money - he has to pay off the ring...

Now we have been fighting because I think it's misleading to have me try on wedding dresses and then tell me we aren't engaged.

He's not the type to be a jerk, but I don't know what's going on.

Hi Yack,

Sounds to me that he would like to officially ask you to marry him and have the ring on your finger first before you say that the two of you are engaged. He may be going about it in a different way than you, but I think it's kind of romantic Are we engaged or not!

I hope all works out well in the long run.

Hugsss

Did you see/try on the ring and how do you know he's paying on it? He may be trying on a few scenarios trying to get accustomed to the idea, back in to it all as-it-were like sabau2 says or something. But I would talk to him, tell him your frustrations as he's the only one that can answer? I maybe wouldn't try on the dresses for him if he's not going to let you try on the ring and be engaged :-) But I agree it isn't fair and sounds a bit "fishy" to be having it all his way.

Until you get the actual ring, don't try on any wedding dresses. Sounds fishy.

We definitely are not "formally" engaged.

I've tried on the engagement ring. He tried on wedding bands with me too. I know he is paying it off because I was sitting there when he gave the salesperson a payment.

Hang in there then - at least until the ring is paid off...
