Next week is going to be the last time I meet up with my friends before we go off to university. We've known each other for 10 years, and every Friday (pretty much) we've either gone swimming or gone to the cinema together. But after next week it can't happen any more, because we're getting split up. This change is on top of all the other ones that are happening at the moment - leaving school, leaving home and everything that comes with that - but it's the one that's been affecting me most. I know they can't, but I wish things would just stay the same!
![]() I guess I should have expected it, though. Mum basically told me that my friends are going to leave once we go to university, because it's just what happens - you meet new people, and forget the old ones. I don't want to forget them, but I won't be surprised if they forget me. People always leave - every single friend I had at school left. People don't want to be around me once they discover what I'm really like. I'm boring, I'm clingy...they're better off without me. Maybe my current friends haven't discovered this yet, but they will. I don't deserve them. But I don't want to lose them! ![]()

I'm sorry you are feeling out of sorts with all the changes going on in your life right now. These friends of yours that are all splitting up to go off to Uni, you say you have known them for 10 years now. That's a long time to be friends. I sincerely doubt that you will forget them or they will forget you....at least not for a long long time hon. If your friends know what you are really like, and they've stayed your friends for 10 years, they are not leaving you hon....they are moving on with their lives just like you are. It's almost a rite of passage as we age that we move on from some of our school time friends. Your mum is right, you will meet new ones and form new and fun relationships. You will always have your friends in your heart and soul...there is always the telephone and you can ring them when you need to hear their voices and want to check up on how they are doing. And they can call you too! Don't forget about emails and burning up the internet with stories to share about how each of you is doing. There are plenty of ways to stay connected to your friends hon. Try not to despair too much over it. I know going on to different things is stressful at times, but you will be fine! You have a wonderful personality and I know you will make friends quickly. Take good care Rio ![]() Hugsss sabby |

My daughter last year thought the same way. As she was leaving for college. To the point her TMJ kicked in so bad her jaw locked. She was going to stay home and take online courses. Till we stopped her, TOld her to go , try it , she what she thought. Right away she made new friends. And still kept alot of the old ones. So go try it , Its scary at first. But everything new is scary. THe best thing she liked was being on her own. To be herself. Know we are here for you. Good luck! |

(((((muffy))))) Thanks. I'm sorry your daughter was worried about it as well, but I'm glad things worked out for her.
![]() We have said that we'd visit each other (luckily we won't be that far apart), but it's hard to know when we'll manage to, because we don't know what free time we'll have. ![]()

It'll be okay, Rio. Really. And you may well find that you do stay in touch with some of your neighborhood chums.

Hi Rio,
I know this is a difficult time but you will get through it. I always envied people who said they were still friends with people from their childhood. I have not retained any friends from my childhood. I did try to rehook up with one but it didn't work out well. But, what I have discovered is that I have learned something from everyone that has come in and out of my life. I am very selective about who I become close to so I don't tend to have many friends at one time. I do have one friend who was a roommate in a mental hospital with me back in 1991 and we are still best friends today. We don't talk or see often because we live a couple of hours apart but when one needs something we know the other will always be there. You may or may not retain these friends, but it won't be because they didn't like you! If they didn't like you they wouldn't have hung with you for 10 years. You can be pro-active and stay in touch with them and try to hook up again down the road. Or who knows, you may take a different turn in life and meet new people and you may not want to keep in touch with them. Go through the mourning because that's what it is when life changes drastically. But don't look at it as a bad thing - look at it as a way to grow and move to a new segment of your life. Tranquility
