I got a new social worker from the epilepsy foundation about 2 weeks ago.she constantly calls me on the phone.Asks me personal questions that I think are inappropriate.every year the epilepsy foundation asks us to fill out forms to put in our files.they ask for our Dr's names.now all of a sudden after 23 years of being a client they said they are going to ask for my medical records.when she asked me over the phone for my Dr's name's she got really nosey & asked what my diganoses is regarding my mental health & she asked me what I discuss with my Counselor.i have never had a social worker from the epilepsy foundation ask me that before.today after i gave her the information yesterday she calls me up & says she lost my file & would like for me to come In & fill out the paperwork so she can see my medical records.she also asked me when was the last time I looked for a job & why am I not working.she asked me why I sleep past 10 am .What I do all day etc .she acts like her being my social worker makes it ok to be nosey.i really do not like how she is treating me.i have some rights to privacy.should i start ignoring her phone calls or what should I do?

Well, ask to speak to her supervisor. It is her job to ask a lot of questions. Ultimately however, her job is to be an advocate on your behalf. Ask the supervisor what kind of expectations you should have regarding the collecting of information for your file.
Do you have anyone you know with similar experiences or situation as yourself? I get a great deal of information from other members of my support group. Another great resource is your Mental Health Association. You may even be able to get someone to go to Social Services with you on your behalf. The best thing I ever did for myself was go down to Social Services and ask to speak to a supervisor. Remember, they are supposed to be there to help you. |

The thing is I have been a client about half my life.been through 10 social workers & never been asked or treated this way before.i would talk to her supervisor but we don't get along.i use to volunteer as a camp counselor for a summer camp for kids with epilepsy.well last year due to 2 injuries I was told by 2 doctors that I should stay home.then the Epilepsy foundation director said to me she wanted a dr's notice.but I am only a volunteer not a paid employee.plus I am a 46 year old adult.so i am hesitant to talk to the women in charge

What if you say no to the requests for medical records. and what if you speak to her about your feelings regarding the way that she is treating you?

Do you feel comfortable telling this case worker your feelings and asking if these things are all necessary? The conversation could go just as you have said here..."I've never gone through all this before. Have things changed? This makes me uncomfortable."

Tell the organization that you need to be assigned to a different social worker because this one has been totally inappropriate with you. Have you discussed with your counselor how intrusive this s.w. has been.
Why do you need to have a social worker from this "foundation?" What is she supposed to be helping you with? You seem to have a clear idea of which questions are inappropriate. Trust you judgement. Next time she asks an inappropriate question, say: "I'm going to have to end this conversation now." Then end it. |
