I've run into so many jacka&& people like this it's unbelieveable. The fact is: You did the right thing to call that little punk on what he said. You had every right to fire him right than and there for comments like that. It's obvious you have an employee problem there. Mixing business and pleasure doesn't mix. You are not there to be their 'buddy' and 'pal'. You are there to manage. You and the other managers shouldn't be mixing your personal life with the employee's. Especially when there are drugs involved. What happens when they begin dealing at work? Everyone will lose their jobs.
It's hard because you feel like the outsider, unliked, unpopular, etc. But remember this is not social hour. You are a manager. You must demand respect and respect the employee's. Why are all these employee's still having breaks at the same time? Maybe if you can rearrange schedules so that they cannot all have the same break time. Mix it up. That will help stop some of the gossiping going on during these breaks.
Check out job sites like Monster.com, Yahoo.job, etc for more info about managing in a difficult situations like this. There are some great books out there too.
Don't expect to be liked all the time. Be honest with the employee's. Don't allow them to walk all over you.
This should also be brought up with the other manager's or above the manager's to keep outside influences coming into the work place.
Stay positive! Don't let them get you down!

Best Wishes,

Ocean

wanna know something else? the delivery drivers... some of them drink... on the job... while delivering. when i mentioned how stupid it is they act like its no big deal. so i just tell them "if you get caught, i claim i barely even know you. im not covering for your stupid ***." they go out back and smoke pot while on the clock. its really pathetic. and when you bring up all the things that could happen its just like theyre invincible. its crazy... thats not disrespectful... thats just stupid.

It's so scary that they are so irresponsible. Knowing they are driving and putting all these people's lives at risk. You're in a hard place that's for sure.
Be Safe!!

salukigirl....I wonder at this point if it is important for you to take stock in your values and what you feel comfortable with in the work place and maybe find another position with another company that does not condone the use of alcohol and drugs while working.

I would hate to see you having more difficulties if something should happen to one of the employees or any other individual who was hurt because of their alcohol/drug use. Not only would you have emotional difficulties over something like that but there could very well be legal ramifiactions.

I would be scared to death to supervise such an unruly bunch of idiots...but of course that is my personal feeling about it. I hate the idea that you might be in for more than you bargained for with this position and company.

Something to think about no?

am i neurotic or just a jerk?

the only problem is that were moving in 5 and 1/2 months. this city is so small that there are no jobs at all. i have aready turned in several applications and no one is hiring because the local economy is total crap out here. i already have a better position in the same company in the city that were moving to so if i quit now i wont have that consistancy. plus no one is going to hire me when were moving in a few months.

i just worked with the same guy who drinks on the job last night and he kept asking me if i wanted a beer. i told him that if he got in trouble i was claiming that i didnt know him and he told me to shut up. they act like because i dont do drugs and get drunk everyday that im no fun and that im a prude or something. its annoying. i hate working there. i guess i just have to put up with it for a little while longer.

luckily.... i got an extra 4,000 in scholarships this semester so i dont have to work as much so im only working there a couple days a week instead of everyday.
