Hi,

Well I wasn’t given the diagnosis of BPD by my last therapist. I had heard it from my psychiatrist. He told me he didn’t give me the diagnosis, and that I came in with it. I am assuming it came from the state hospital maybe, I am not sure. I don’t even know if I have BPD officially. I am scheduled for a therapist appointment on Thursday.
Anyway I live alone and have some realizations of myself. I haven’t been in a serious relationship, or long lasting one.
I have never been broken up with. I know that if I met someone, who, I really liked, connected with on an emotional and physical level, and they broke up with me.
Trigger If they broke up with me, I would most likely threaten to kill myself, to prevent them from leaving. And that is terrible to admit but it is true I would do that. And I have actually laughed out loud cause, I know I am that type of person.
Is that considered a thing of BPD? Or another type of personality disorder?

It doesn't sound like BPD to me.

I think a person with BPD would feel suicidal due to abandonment issues. They'd also need other characteristics to be considered BPD, IMO.

Threatening to kill oneself is a form of emotional abuse, to create fear in another person in order to get them to stay. It's a control tactic and not something they would act out on. BPD? I would say no.. but I'm not qualified to answer.

While I do think that someone with BPD could very well threaten such a thing, there would need to be other criteria met for the dx.

Borderline Personality Disorder Symptoms

Here is another article, also by Doc John
Borderline Personality Disorder: Symptoms & Treatments
In this article he states :"There is no evidence that borderline personality disorder is more common in women." (Under the statistics heading).

In the first article, he states it being "more prevalent in females". Disconnect there. But I believe that this statement might be based more on dx's than actual prevalence. It got that rep (if I had to guess, I'd say it proceeded from the old "hysterical" female b.s. diagnosed in days of yore) and was dx'd that way accordingly. But guys can just as well have it, no doubt about that.
Thanks for this!

Whatever it’s not fair to attempt suicide when someone is breaking with you. It’s a sign of emotional manipulation. From the knowledge I have, people with B.P.D. do it but they feel a terrible fear of abandonment. I have had couples who did it and they didn’t have a personality disorder.
Out of labels you have to think yourself that it’s not fair with the other person. And together with thinking in the other person you have to think of yourself. What are you gonna get out of that? What kind if relationship you are gonna build with the other person?

Being diagnosed or not with BPD, is there any possibility of attending to Dialectic Behavioural Therapy? I ask you because as to I know it teaches techniques to un attach yourself from people and things and relying on yourself and your resilience.
