Please do not turn this thread into a debate - I am very sick with depression and with my Eating Disorder and am looking for help.

My T brought up a question today that I really don't know how to answer. I have had my faith in God pretty much all of my life. He asked me what my "routine" or "way" was to get comfort from God.

I was a tad bit shocked to find that I really don't know.

I pray and ask for strength, forgiveness, for help in finding solutions, I pray for other people.

However, in the middle of this great depression that I have going on right now - I just see that God has done everything that he can by providing me with a good T.

Of what other comfort can be derived from God right now??

Reading the scriptures is of no comfort. I know that other people have experienced great hardship.

I know some way I must find a way to build a new life - to find new meaning - but right now I don't have a clue.

So what does my T mean? Comfort from God?

Free ,

I too have some trouble finding the correct answer to that question > It is my great faith in God that moves the mountains from the sea. Sometime I take comfort in the things that I cannot see in life knowing that God does have his own seasons.

My routine is like yours I pray for myself and others but it is my faith and belief that allows that ray of sunshine to enter the cloudy day . I ask where does this light come from if it is not of God than what creates this magnificant thing . How can light be so overwhelming to the darkness //

this is how somedays I get my comfort from God -- blindness by faith and faith is believing in something you cannot see

Hope it helps

One thing that sometimes helps is to focus on gratitude, particularly in your prayers. One approach to this is each day to thank Him for something that you have not thanked him for previously. Another way is once a day to say a prayer in which you don't ask for anything, and only offer thanks. These techniques do often help with depression.

I'm not sure that I really answered your question though. It is hard to feel comfort when you are depressed. I don't know about you, but I tend to not let myself feel comfort. He is there and ready to offer it though. Sometimes it is a warm feeling inside. Sometimes it is through a person who is kind to you, or maybe an animal, or a beautiful sunset. There are many possibilities, but all of them require us to be receptive to them. We have to seek Him, and the answers that He offers, and not dismiss them as something else.

It's having faith and knowing that God is carrying you through the rough times. It's knowing that "this too, shall pass." But we can't lay around waiting for it to happen. We have to work at it ourselves, as well.

What I do during those times, is try to fill my mind with beauty; beauty in the sunset or sunrise, in the perfection of a flower or a leaf, listen to beautiful music, even look at beautiful clothes with the eye of an artist or creator, etc. God works through all of these things.

Of course, praise and worship music is my mainstay, even if sometimes I don't quite relate to a particular hymn.

When I am distraught I sometimes look to my scriptures and search out a topic. (Sometimes I have to fight myself to do this. Isn't it strange that we find it difficult to do the things we know may help us?) That is when I get sweet comfort in a verse - when I am searching with the intensity of need. That is also when I find myself more readily likening the scriptures to myself and seeing them as being written specifically to me. Like a letter from heaven. (Sometimes, I'll sleep with my scriptures like they're a teddy bear when I've done this.)

I also agree with the gratitude prayer. That usually warms up my heart.

Freewill,

Sometimes God just calls us to rest in His will for our lives. He gives us faith to keep trusting in Him even when we don't understand what He is doing in our lives.

My friend sent me a really wonderful devotional for Christmas, called Streams in the Desert. If you can find a copy, pick one up. It is wonderful, and deals with trusting God in the midst of suffering.

I have been using food to comfort me. I also enjoy nature.

If you have a good T -- that is a great blessing. I think he is just trying to encourage you to identify your areas of comfort in your life right now.

Please feel free to PM me anytime. How does God provide comfort for you?

Hugs,

EJ

An addition to the above. Today is a mild, breezy day. As I walked my dog past the eucalyptus trees, the breeze rustled the branches and leaves. I closed my eyes and I imagined God/Jesus walking past, the hem of His robes rustling the trees... then I sang to myself "Kumbaya" which means "come by here".

Read the natural progression in the song when you ask the Lord to "come by here." How does God provide comfort for you?

KUMBAYA

I find comfort in knowing there is a higher power and that He is in charge. He has a Master plan of all plans, and a higher perspective. Romans 8:28 For we know that all things work together for good to them who are the called according to His purpose.

He can fix anything I break. How does God provide comfort for you?
