This week I have had a terrible mixed episode and I just cannot get things done or function properly and missed some of my classes. Even though I had so much trouble getting to sleep tuesday night, I was determined to try my best to make it to class wednesday cause I had an exam (that I could hardly study for) in my art history class. Well I overslept and got there 30 minutes late.

When I got to the classroom, I apologized for being late and said I would get a note from my doctor (my pdoc or T) as to why, and he just said "Yeah you are REALLY late." So he handed me the test and I went to go sit down.

Well part of my disability, aside from mental illness, is my obesity because of the meds I'm on. I am registered with disability services on campus and set up to have a table and chair in each classroom cause I cannot fit into the desks.

So when I went to sit in my table and chair (which is clearly marked "Use by persons registered with disability only") someone was sitting in it. I didn't know what to do except to tell them kindly, that seat is for people with disabilities and I am set up to have that seat reserved for me. So he was really nice and apologized and moved to another seat.

Well, the teacher saw it. And he went up to me and said, "I need a word with you." so I got up and kinda half way out the door is where we talked. He asked me why I made that guy move, and I told him, I am registered with disability and thats my seat, otherwise I Have nowhere to sit. He asked "Is part of your disability that you're overweight?" and I said yes but also mental illness. Then he left and I went back to my chair. I did really bad on the test because of feeling humiliated and distracted, plus it was hard for me to study cause my mixed episode.

After everyone was done with the exam he told us to come to the front and give their exams to him. Once I got up there I handed him mine, and I told him "I have a note from my doctor to excuse my absence on monday." and tried to show it to him, but he wouldn't look at it, and he raised his voice and said "I am going to need to see some documentation for your disability by monday!" IN FRONT OF THE WHOLE CLASS.

1. He doesn't need to see documentation, that is for the disability coordinator Only

2. He embarrassed me in front of the whole class, and let everyone know that I have a disability

3. He wouldn't even look at my note excusing my absence monday

I went to my disability coordinator after this class and bawled my eyes out, telling him everything the teacher did and said to me. He said he is going to talk to the teacher. He even asked me how I felt about going back to the class (as in continuing the class). At this point I'm not even sure, but if I dropped the class, my status would go to part time student and my grant money would change, meaning I would have to pay back a lot of money I already used.

I am sooo upset and embarrassed and angry. I can't sleep tonight, it keeps running through my head

Yes, he definitely violated the policy--and I do hope he gets into trouble. I'm sorry all this mess has happened. Are the tests essay or are they multiple choice? I'm just hoping the teacher doesn't have any leeway with scoring the answers.

Dear one, all I can say is get in contact with your psychiatrist ASAP and see if your meds can be changed, etc. Also, check to see if your school has a policy where medical allowances can be made, even a policy where you could drop a class and not get penalized, if it comes to that.

People. They're the worst. We can isolate ourselves from them. We can run from them. We can silently harden our hearts so they are not able to enter and wreak havoc. But I have never been able to completely escape them. I have tried before, believe me, but eventually I got lonely and hungry. And when I came out, their faces were not all mean. Their intentions were not always evil against me. I was surprised. But I learned that people are not my enemy. Giving up is. So I chose to whip my enemies butt hardcore. I started living, and living, and then I lived some more! It made my enemy so so angry. I was the victor in this battle. If I can do it, it is a possibility that others can do too!!! Even you my friend! Think of that man as a mere man. He's not God. He's not satan either. He's just a man, a mere man. That helps me to deal with mere men and women on a daily basis, when I realize that they are just like me. Fallible. Most of the time intending to do good. In your own heart and mind, is strength. I know it's there. You do too <3 You probably just forgot. I hope you feel better very very soon my friend! Sincerely, Glinda Gail

There is absolutely no reason your teacher needed to do that. He is just a miserable jerk who likes to pick on students. THere are people out there who are ignorant, and refuse to understand, and I am sorry that this one had to be your teacher.

I arrived 30 min late for a final as well, there were whispers while I was walking in. I was just not into school. I failed that test. Another class (art history) she called me out while me and my group were presenting, said my answer was wrong, and got into an argument with me about external matters (in front of the whole class) this teacher, everyday, called on me "shy girl" and not my real name. Students just sat there looking in disbelief, but nobody said anything

This led to me transferring, changing everything, going home until I felt better.. things got so much better. there are people who understand and will help. But you need to let this go, things happen for a reason, you will just get stronger. You will look back and say this was just a bump on the road. He refuses to see your potential, but don't let that stop you.

This will pass.

((((Krisakira)))) What an a..hole, that man does not deserve to be in a teaching environment let alone teach in one. I would probably talk to the governors/ write them a letter explaining his behaviour towards you and how it has affected you. this man deserves the sack and they are the ones with that authority.

if you don't want to continue that class it may be possible for you to change to a different one to keep your full time student status. talk to your disability person about it.

Ok the whole class now know you have a disability, this is not something to be ashamed of, if anyone gives you any grief tell them you are twice the person they are because you have twice as much to deal with to achieve the same thing. they would probably not be able to cope with the things you do. It takes a strong person to accept they have a disability and get help with it. you have as much right to do whatever you chose to do in your life as any other person. you are an equal or higher, not a lesser person.

best wishes for whatever you decide to do x

Well in the morning I have Art History and have to face the teacher. My disability coordinator said he had been trying to get in contact with the teacher and had been unsuccessful since Friday. Until they do talk I'm afraid of my teacher to be honest. I'm afraid he wil say "well last week I said I needed to see your documentation for your disability by Monday, so hand it over!" which then I won't have because my doctors documentation is none of my teachers business. It's between me, my doctors, and the Grady from disability. Gready has my documentation

((((krisa)))) Could you write a note to him on paper saying something like the following? So that you could have a physical piece of something to hand him for when he asks:

Your behavior towards me last week was inappropriate and unprofessional.
I have reported you to the board. I have been advised to not share my medical information with you at this time.
Please contact________, as they've been trying to discuss this matter with you for a week with no response from you.
Thanks for this!

Great idea, BlueInanna! Terrific! Would you be up to doing that, kriaskira? Deathlyones summed up the man best: "I'm sorry, that is a jerk not a teacher." AMEN! He needs reporting, and to be sanctioned. Such unprofessional behavior requires action by his peers.

Handing him a note saying that you are not required by any law to give him that information--and that he is out of line in asking for it--does seem like a non-aggressive way of standing your ground.

I'm so, so sorry you're having to deal with this. Please leave as much as possible to the school's disability coordinator.

Roadie

I agree with the people who have said just to let him know that he violated the school's disabilities policy, and that disability services have been notified. Be polite though, because as much of an uncaring, un-empathetic a**hole he is, you don't want to get too much on his bad side while you're still in his class unfortunately.

Now, I'm not sure if this goes for your school, but in mine students with disabilities can get special permission to count as FULL TIME with one less class than non-disabled students. I'm doing that right now, since I can't handle a full course load but still need the benefits if I want to be in school. Definitely ask disability services, because even here not a lot of people seem to know it's even an option!

And last but not least keep your head up, it's hard when dealing with cruel people but you're the better person in this situation. I know being treated badly makes us feeling like bad people (inversely!) but you aren't doing anything wrong.
