I'm a 2nd year in undergrad college, and I have an extremely difficult time getting myself to go to class.
I am passing my classes and I am able to finish assignments and study for exams, but I simply stopped going to classes that don't count attendance.
Things that should motivate me to go don't.

People tell me "your parents are paying for you to go to class" but I feel like they don't understand. I just can't get up and go.
Do I feel terrible for wasting my parents' money? OF COURSE. I feel like ****. But that does not motivate me at all, sadly.

Have any of you experienced this and does anyone have any advice?

for me, school is school. yes, its expensive. yes i know that i should be motived because it is helping my future to be getting an education. I also struggle with the motivation aspect tho. Hav you thought about *why* you don't want to go? For me its because I hav ADHD and its boring. hav you considered depreession? anxiety?

I was wondering, too, about depression. Also, are you getting enough sleep? Most college students don't. You might consider going to a campus counselor to get some suggestions.

I knew a girl when I was in college who never went to class. She finally went to the counselor and he put her on a system where she would reward herself for going to class, by doing something like going out to eat when she went to her classes that day.

True, some classes are boring, but I took copious notes and that kept me occupied during the class session--even if the prof wasn't really talking about anything I thought might be on the tests!

Thanks for the responses!
Yeah, I have depression and insomnia, and I KNOW my depression plays a huge part in it. I am on depression meds and have been since I had a large bout of it a couple of years ago, and it has helped me tremendously, so I guess I figured it didn't have anything to do with my depression.

The classes I'm taking are awful, SO boring, and I am not at all interested in them. They're classes I have to take to work up to the interesting psychology classes I'll be taking later, so I think that plays a large part, too. They are terrible, in my opinion.

how long do you have to take the " boring classes" for

you should just go for it.... they won't last forever, and you'll be rewarded with the classes you like

Hey there!

I'm also an Undergrad Sophomore with the same exact problem. I've got the good grades and I do assignments, but I totally bomb test questions about in class material. I've got a GPA based scholarship, so you'd think I'd try harder, but I've got no motivation. I've got this weird mindset of "This is such a big deal that its not even worth trying for anyways" going on.

But maybe its like everyone says and its just depression and boring classes. So here's to getting into classes for our majors soon! Hahah

Expensive and tragically boring, I had the same experience in my first degree. Except I simply stopped going to classes altogether.

You either need to care about it enough to go, or to be persistent enough to keep doing something you don't care enough about. For me those things took a few years, so I took a bit of a break and came back to University later.

I still procrastinate, both for lectures (which I can do online), and assignment work. But when I completely run out of time to procrastinate, I sit down and work until the job's done heh (often 12+ hours in a single session). I don't recommend it at all, but it's worked for me so far.

I experienced the same thing when I was taking a lot of gen ed classes, they seemed pointless and boring. I would skip class once in a while because I didn't think it would be worth it to go and listen to a boring lecture that would put me to sleep. But I just learned to deal with the classes and kept telling myself that if I went to class and studied hard, I'd get through all the boring classes and get to the good stuff for my major. I think you just have to keep plugging away and get through it somehow.

It's a REALLY hard habit to break! There is no reward for going if you are doing well on exams--boring in the short term and seems pointless in the long term. And you're not wasting money if you're learning the material. (I think it's weird when people say that anyway!)

Are you acing exams so far? If you're going on past your BA/BS, your gpa affects your grad school choices a lot. Can focusing on that help?

Accountability can help sometimes. Have a friend text every day "did you go to class?"--keeps you from feeling like there's zero consequence for skipping if you feel a little guilty answering no. Or you could ask someone to text you "get your butt to class" if that would help.

Does your school offer free counseling for students? Might be a good idea to stop in. If you feel like crap and are still doing it, the depression could be affecting you. The counselor can be another source of accountability to keep you on track, too.

Anyway, been there! Hope you get it figured out!!

I too have same problem but diffrent reason. It's end of my 7th semester & i am defaulter in all 7 sem's.
Every night i say to myself "tomorow,no matter what, i will attend college" and by the time i wake up,its 2hrs late already. No motivation seems to work. I suspect i have AvPD. Whatever it is, its affecting my grades and i barely manage to pass every time. Feeling hopeless. Help me, if possible.

in undergrad gen ed classes skipping class may not be a big deal as long as you are acing your exams (meaning nothing lower than A). But, beware that this behavior might follow you through your academic career if not nipped in the bud right now, and the behavior tends to take on a life of its own. For example, I basically never went to class the second semester of first year grad school program and now I'm looking down the seemingly endless and hopeless well of the "Medical Leave of Absence". If I don't go back by Sept then I don't get achance at finishing an MA and I'm left in the same spot I was four years ago when I first applied to grad school. Just my two cents.
Thanks for this!
