Swimming in gym class is the worst. Gym teacher forces student into pool, is charged with abuse (VIDEO).

I don't know about this situation as I didn't read the article. A teacher should not physically force a student to do something. However, for me swimming in high school was so much better than regular gym class. I took 2 years of swimming.

No it should not be banned. But it should be reasonable if one cannot swim then do something else. tc

I don't think it should. You're looking at a pretty extreme example, 99% of all swimming classes are not like that. I had swimming classes for 3 years and this never happened. These rare occurances happen in everything, yet, we can't really ban everything, can we?

I believe the best is to report these individuals, it can only make us a better society.

As a competitive swimmer myself for many years, and as a past lifeguard and swim instructor, I really believe in the value of learning how to swim. It is surprising how many people have never learned. It could save your life. So I actually champion schools who offer swimming as part of a gym class. However, that being said, water safety is the number one priority. If the person does not know how to swim, it should be common sense not to force them to dive into the deep end (literally and figuratively).

Swim classes in school are an actual thing? WTF? I get that it's important, but I'd really worry about safety.

Mine & my son's experience of school gym swim lessons was that by the time you travelled to the pool and got changed there was so little time to swim it was hardly worth it. I left school barely able to swim (since self taught) and we paid for private lessons for son, which were much better quality and ratio than those a school PT instructor could give.

That said swim lessons within the school curriculum reach children who are disadvantaged and may otherwise never get to a pool. For that alone they have worth.

The guy in the video has seriously lost it, perhaps he is having a breakdown, maybe he has a lot of stress he can't cope with, either way he shouldn't be teaching.

I don't think it should be banned as it could be helpful to students who can't do certain types of exercises due to health issues, but that teacher should not have tried to force the girl into the pool. He could've just given her a written assignment and maybe take some points off for that day.

(I wish my high school had a swimming pool).

when i was at school, "gym class" meant both swimming anf gym

it was a couple of times a week- and the teacher would decide what we did

(say if their was a sports day coming up), we'd do gym.

or if not, we'd swim- it all depended on teacher's choice.

you know what i mean.. their wasn't an individual "swimming" subject

No. Swimming in gym class is horrible, yes, but gym class as a whole is horrible. I see no reason for it to be banned.
