have there been any self-help books (or workbooks) that really helped you? i'm kind of looking to supplement my weekly therapy by doing a little bit of my own reading and trying to better myself in that way. so... has anything been especially effective for you?

It really depends on what you are looking for help with and what kinds of issues you are facing.
Can you provide some more specifics about what you are wanting? For example, help managing depression or anxiety, relaxation techniques, mindfulness, specific therapies (CBT DBT etc)? There are a lot of books out there and most look at a particular issue or therapy technique. |

My therapist recommended for me "Thoughts and Feelings: Taking Control of Your Moods and Your Life" 4th Edition by Matthew McKay PhD. I haven't started it yet, will be tomorrow, but I'll let you know what I think of it

I warmly recommend the book "Reinventing Your Life: The Breakthrough Program to End Negative Behavior and Feel Great Again" by Jeffrey Young and Janet Klosko. It's definitely one of those books that you shouldn't judge by its cover (or its title), as it's chock-full of insight and practicable advice for just about every kind of patient that they've seen in therapy over the course of two long careers. I've had a lot of people read it by now, and just about everyone finds something that applies to them and that they didn't realize before, so if you're looking for something to stimulate your thinking on your life but don't really know what specifically you're looking for, I really encourage you to pick it up.

Hi coleychi,
I strongly recommend "Zen in Martial Arts by Joe Hyams". Trust me, it's a life changing book where none of the chapters are more than 4-5 pages, and in reality the book has nothing to do with Martial Arts, except for the principles that are required to conduct oneself in real life. If you can understand and bring those simple principles in your life, you won't need any other self-help book ever. Bless you. |
