I've tried journaling in the past and it's made me feel worse. It hasn't been cathartic.

I want to try again.

A bit about me: I am attempting to stave off a depressive episode (bipolar 1) and I have several anxiety disorders.

My question is, where can I find the most information about how to start a journal, journaling ideas, etc. Google?

I like to research things before I start them. If I do so, I think I'll have a greater chance of developing a habit of journaling by not "jumping right in."

Thanks!

Here's a website with a 31 day challenge to help get you started. How to Jumpstart Your Journaling | A 31-Day Journaling Prompt Calendar | The Art of Manliness

Also, try your library for books on the subject. There are some great books out there and many more websites to help you in your journey.

I also find art journaling to be helpful. Maybe it's something to consider if writing didn't work for you.

I journal all the time, but I am used to it because I have been doing it since I was a kid. I have a small pocket journal that I keep in my purse and I have a Word document that I have been using for the last 2+ years and is over 280 pages long. Sometimes it is easier for me to type my thoughts instead of writing them for some reason. The pocket journal is helpful when I have my therapy sessions because sometimes I forget what I want to talk about and I don't want to waste time and money. I happen to like journaling because I can write or type anything I want to without the fear of being judged. But that is just me.

I have a social group on here all about journaling, albeit one that isn't very active at all. The link to it is in my signature.

Anyways, I journal and it's cathartic to me. I have one that I love to write in and a favorite pen of mine that I use to write with. I prefer the pen and paper kind of journal to an online one, much more private IMHO.

The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron is a really good book to help you get started with writing.
