With so much going on in todays world to educate ourselves about ourselves, so many books and cd's and the internet why aren't people talking about it more here?

I for one, find it fascinating and fun! I think it's a great addition to the slow pace and one sided approach to therapy where therapy tends to decline advice giving in comparison to self-help.

In one article in PC (maybe DocJohn?Grohol) he says much can be accomplished on one's own.

Anybody have some favorites? I love yoga and dance(yes dance is very important for keeping me from the blues), meditation, massage, and a book I'm reading now Saying Yes To Change, Essential Wisdom for Your Journey by Joan Z. Borysenko Phd & Gordon F. Dveirin Ed.D. It comes with a cd I have yet to listen too, but think I will tonight.

Anybody else reading or going through anything good they want to share?

jacqueline, I agree with you. It's sad to see that not too many people are willing to work on themselves on their own.

Just recently I visited another site very strong on self-help and using that Dr's techniques, I destroyed a trigger from my past. I posted about it, but had no responses. It was in PTSD. You'd think people would want to do destroy triggers for themselves. PTSD isn't any fun!

I do a lot of gardening from my wheelchair. It's a plus in my book that I do it in a wheelchair. For me, it's therapy to get my hands in the dirt and mud, to see my nurturing pay off when flowers smile back at me, when droppy leaves perk up and especially when I harvest what little veggies I can grow in my postage stamp sized yard. Not to mention "putting up" said veggies and fruits. I also listen to Gospel music alot. The music itself is a pick-me-up and the truths in the words are invaluable.

There are a few crafts that I'm into right now but I'm always on the lookout for new ideas and I try them out. Keeps the mind from going stale, ya know?

It's been a while since I've been able to sit down and read a book but when I do, it's not a dumb novel or fiction. It's usually a self-help book or something that will leave something of value in my life.

I say HOORAH for you and me and people like us! We rock!

I'm kind of new to these forums. But I have used a lot of self help books over the past several years. I love to read and find some self help very helpful. It can be done on my time, althou I tend to push myself too much. Try to fix everything in one day.

I like the book Boundries. Its been years sence I read it but I might pick up another copy

Boundaries are very good to have... and to realize other people either have them or they don't. I've found that people who don't have boundaries will walk all over mine and not understand when I hold mine.

I had to learn about boundaries when I was in therapy. I wasn't allowed any when growing up.

Again... Welcome, Patty!

Wow that's the most beautiful post! Everything you said and the colors. You must be a really positive person!
Just recently I visited another site very strong on self-help and using that Dr's techniques, I destroyed a trigger from my past. I posted about it, but had no responses. It was in PTSD. You'd think people would want to do destroy triggers for themselves. PTSD isn't any fun! No, I understand and their is just too much to work through to just go in one or two hours a week and too bad you didn't get any responses. I feel shut down by some and ignored by others when it comes to things not related to therapy on the boards here. It's a bit discouraging at times. I love to hear positive new ways of doing things.

I do a lot of gardening from my wheelchair. It's a plus in my book that I do it in a wheelchair.I give you credit for that. That whole paragraph is what got me, it's just beautiful the way you describe things especially the flowers. Keep me posted on ideas! Oh by the way, I just grew basil and sage in my windowsill. (no garden) but it is so so good to smell in the kitchen. I don't have a garden, wish I did.

Wow! I haven't heard of that book in ages! Is it small, thin and mine had a beige cover? Great book right? I don't remember who it's by, but I always recommend that one because I don't know of any others of it's kind. Not that any other needs to be. It seems like it says just the right amount of stuff and says all that needed to be said. At least that's my memory of it. Welcome!

I actually wrote the, deepest, written account I've ever written in this lifetime in this forum, and the credit goes to all those who wrote me with their unique viewpoints, visions, and hearts. I refer back to this thread daily, it has become my Bible or so to speak, my framework for where I was once, and every time I read it, I learn a little more..I feel, truly understood here

Wow, I was really touched by that and especially your first post in many ways. It was really clear and I have felt the same way, except for not having any answers part. I am an answer person. I am also an artist, I like the blending of the two and find it difficult to read or hear any stories. I actually was deeply moved by our similarities to appreciate more how someone like you is feeling when someone like me is applying pressure. Thank you for that lesson. Also, I am having a hard time expressing my deeper feelings on this board. In person or at least in private I am quite different, I tend to worry about it's public permanence here and yet I end up disclosing too much of myself by being factual. Thats what I call driving with the brake on.

Junerain, I posted in the thread you linked us to. Hope I didn't mess anything up for you. If I did, let me know and I'll have it removed.

I think if you go to amazon.com and enter a search for self-help or other kinds of books you will find a lot. Check out the reader reviews to see which ones people like. Also the negative reviews are sometimes helpful in deciding if you want to get a book. When everyone is totally enthusiastic it can make it hard to evaluate something.
