When you SI do you plan it or is it impulsive?
Are you intoxicated or not, if so on what? For me it has always been planned, except for the second part of my first SI, was so frustrated that the first part didn’t work out as planned (I won’t go into details) And I have always been sober, so I can’t even blame my actions on drugs or alcohol for my actions. |

I'm always sober during SI, although whether or not I'm maniacal... that's a different matter.
At first, SI started off impulsively. Now I find myself planning it out days in advance. Sometimes I'm calm and mechanical, but not always. It depends on the situation at hand...

I would say very impulsive, and I'm not always sober but for the most part I am. If I'm not sober it would be drinking alcohol or something of that sort.

I was always sober while I did it (never have been drunk before), and it was impulsive.

When I self injured it was always impulsive, and I may or may not have had a bit of alcohol in my system, still today when I slip up once and awhile and SI it's always impulsive and I'm sober, and usually in the middle of a flashback or high alert mode with my PTSD

Pretty much always impulsive, though sometimes I could "feel" the urges building up, so would "decide" to cut sooner rather than later (because putting it off always seems to make it worse when I finally do it.) So I guess sometimes it's planned (sorta) but that impulsive urge comes first...the planning has to do with how much willpower I happen to have.
I am basically always sober. There has been once or twice when I had a drink before it, but I've never been drunk. |

I'm not really sure if it was impulsive or not, usually I would consider it impulsive but sometimes it was planned, usually only for a few hours (waiting until I had time alone where I wouldnt be caught...). Always sober too. Although a few times I intentionally took too many benadryl (to the point of hallucinating) and wanted to but didn't. I think that's considered SI by itself though...

Always sober.
It depends. Sometimes I'll plan it and sometimes I'll just grab the tool at hand on an impulse. |

I did not plan SI when I did it. I was really upset and acted on impulse. Since then it's been an addiction and I haven't stopped. I've always been sober so I just have my bad decision making brain to blame.

i do both planned and impulsive SI. when i have something planned, then it pretty much will happen. even if that doesn't happen when it's first planned, someday later it will happen. i'm not sure why those are so impossible for me to fight. impulsive things happen every so often too, of course. hard to fight in their own way.
i'm intrigued that so many people say they're "always sober" when they SI. i mean... yea... just interested. i am sober most of the time when i do it. but my partner and i have had conversations about how substances can change the experience. we both like it more when we're drinking, and find it to be a more dangerous situation - i'm glad we have come to be aware of that about our drinking and SI. i also like that we can be supportive to each other. however, we have found that we like SI less when smoking weed. so, interestingly enough, when fighting a really difficult urge, smoking has helped us stay safer (i'm all about harm reduction, so i think that's fascinating). |

Whenever we SI it is something that comes from impulsiveness as it usually happens when we are in the middle of something or when something comes up for us. We are sober. SI'ing is a way to try to make the pain stop. It is somehow trying to bring the pain from the inside to the outside. Somehow if we do it, seeing it somehow releases something from the inside. Sometimes it works for the moment but then when the moment passes then we have both the reason we did it and the thing we did that we then have to deal with. It is like a lose lose situaltion and we pay either way.
We may have planned it sometimes like when we would go to family get togethers and knew that when we got home to get rid of feeling so worthless and the things that happened we knew that we had a way of letting us know we were not good. So I guess in that aspect it was planned in a way. Althugh this is not something that would be done as often as when things would just hit and the need to release the pain came. Jennifer of dps |
