I'm new here. And i just wanted to mention that i also go to this site because i'm bipolar. when i'm happy it's okay, but when i get sad it's hard for me to dispell the need for pain to stop my thoughts. it's only been 45 days of my new 'hobby' and so far it's not that bad but i can tell if i don't stop soon it's going to get worse. i had stopped for a week and then then i had to start again. then i told myself i'd stop and then couldn't. I didn't realize that it was going to be like this. i've tried the ice cube thing which is okay but it's not the same. i've started to read the thing you guys have at the top of this page but it's still hard for me to weigh out the odds. I always make sure my cuts are clean and the razor and stuff and they're never that deep. and i make sure the scars are always under clothing and stuff. but i'm terrified that some ones going to find out and say stuff to me. i want to get better before they find out. my parents and sis are under enough stress with the divorce (i'm only 14) and my friends would probably tell. so this is all i'll : got for right now. so can anyone help me?

Do you have a doctor or therapist? Someone told you that you are bipolar, I am presuming? Can you talk to that person about this stuff? Cutting is a symptom. It means that you are overwhelmed with emotions that get out of control and you are trying to keep some control. It is really hard for kids when their parents are going through divorce, so it is totally understandable that you're having a rough time. Especially with bipolar disorder on top of that. You can manage it though. I know that cutting seems like it helps at the time, but then it leaves you worrying about whether someone is going to find out (and maybe sometimes there is a secret wish that someone will find out so that they will know how bad you are hurting, if it seems like nobody recognizes the depth of your pain), and you feel bad about it, and those feelings don't really go a way. They are still there and still getting bigger, because you have to find a healthy way to cope with what is going on in your life. It is real, and it is hard.
You can talk to us here, and I hope that helps. I hope that you can also find someone to talk to IRL, who can help you to find effective ways to cope. You can learn those skills. The sooner you get help with that, the easier it will be to overcome this. Rap

There is no easy out now. You are addicted to it and there is no magic cure. If you want to quit it is going to take determination and the longer you keep going the harder it will be to quit.
It may not seem that bad right now but like any other addiction it will get worse if you don't quit. Eventually it will take more cuts or they will get deeper and scars will become even harder to hide. All those suggestions like the ice cubes ARE good, but you figured it out, they arn't the same and none of them, will be. I wish you th best of luck and hope you find better coping mechanisms to substitute.

Your cutting is a coping mechanism that the longer you continue the more difficult it will be to stop. It is an indication that you are struggling with something. Do you have a pdoc for bipolar? A t too? Either one can help you sort through what is going on in your life causing so much distress. It really is a negative way to cope even though it may not seem so right now. Please seek someone who can help you. Don't get to the point where you have more physical and emotional scars. Please try and stay safe. I am bipolar too and know that it can sometimes be hard to deal with. If you ever want someone to talk to feel free to PM me any time. Take care.

Try to find something to distract yourself, or do or something about what is making you feel this way, as I do red pen instead of cut or hold ice. You can also go see Dr. Shrinker!
