... frankly; what are they?
I have been allowed to read my medical assessment and it does state I have self inflicted, superficial cuts on my left arm.

What is "superficial?" I have four thick and red scars from a state of self harm frenzy.

They *are* lilac, bumpy, thick and rather disgusting.

Gross...

Sorry, guys..
guess I shall open the rosebuds

Firstly, add a trigger icon!

Well I always thought they were cuts that didn't need stiches or that didn't go too deep....yours don't sound superficial to me!

Some good advice was given to me, when you feel like cutting, squeeze down on some ice cubes, apparently what you feel relieves that feeling of wanting to cut.

Give it a try

Needs a trigger icon for sure. I'm not understanding why you're describing your cuts here anyway?
Thanks for this!

Maybe I am wrong but thought he described them to see if we could tell him if superficial....I dunno though....just my perception lol

Superficial means "near the surface"and probably not needing stitches. Would you prefer it say something else? If yes then tell them to change it I guess.

How do I add a trigger icon to an existing thread?
So sorry. NEVER meant to harm/trigger anyone.

Please help.

Of course you didn't! Just go to edit and add trigger from there

Just an FYI about trigger icons and adding them after a post has been made.

There is only about a 4 hour edit time on any post made, so if you are trying to edit after that time, it won't work.

The best thing anyone can do, whether it be the poster or another member reading is to use the "report post" function so that the team will get the message that a trigger icon is needed to be added and we'll be happy to do it for you.
Thanks for this!

The doctor meant superficial as in a slash, not a stab or puncture wound. It does not gauge the depth of the cut per se. It merely suggests the method, and describes a wound with greater damage to the skin than internal tissue. Scar size has nothing to do with the matter. You could be covered head to toe in burn scars, and the damage could still be classed as superficial. Alternatively, you could have nothing more than a bruise on the outside, and great damage internally. It's nothing more than a standard way to describe the type of wound you inflicted.
Either way, why does it matter? This is a very minor detail to dwell on. I hope you don't feel he was minimising your wounds. It's just doctor talk. :3

I did feel they were minimizing it. I generally feel not being taken seriously at all. I am just so inappropriate in every way. I feel being laughed at and patronized when, in truth, it is extremely difficult to make it through the day or just through the hour.

I think I can appreciate how it is you felt that way, but I agree with Joe-Anna.

They probably mean superficial in the sense that you didn't cut into the fatty tissue. The top layer of the skin may be cut and there may be scaring but it is less life treating than cutting deeper. Cutting into the fatty tissue often needs stitches to close the wound. Cutting beyond that is into the muscle tissue and may need stiches and artery repair. They probably mean to differentiate non suicidal self harm from a suicide attempt.

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
