...if I wanted to stop cutting. My initial reaction was to go quiet. But not because I was embarrassed or ashamed - I really put some thought into the question. She went on to tell me that there was no right or wrong answer. And i decided that I don't want to stop cutting - but i do want to cut out the habitual cuts, where I don't cut because I "need" it as much as out of routine. I want it to be available if things are rough but not as an everyday every situation coping mechanism.
Has t ever asked you that? If they did - how would you respond? Was my response appropriate? I don't actually remember how she responded but I think it was just like an "okay, cool" type response. What does that mean?

I don't have a T but I agree, in a way. That's what I used to think, but if you keep cutting when you "need" it, then you're conditioning your mind to use SI as a backup solution, and you'll never get to solve the actual problem.

My T never asked me that. Its a coping mechanism that helps but its dangerous so part of me would want to stop but the other part wouldn't want to stop something that helps me get through certain situations. I honestly feel better after SI. That being said, I know I need to learn better coping techniques.

I'm sure at some point a doctor or a therapist has asked me that. And the answer is no. Why? Because I don't care. I don't do it on a regular basis and usually not to the point that I need to see a doctor. Plus, I personally don't have a good enough reason to stop.

wow I think your answer was great. this is exactly how I deal with my SI (I no longer cut) I don't tell my T when I do it because it is kind of a personal thing IRL but I doubt she would ever ask me to stop.
I no longer SI out of routine but I do when things feel completely out of control and or when I feel I deserve it .so it can be done and it is a great reachable goal although difficult to achieve. i wish you well. I think it is a great strength to know realistic goals
