I'm an adult who SI's. My question is whether I'm the only one who plans it. Sometimes stress overtakes me, and I immediately feel it's the only option in order to get a release. However, more often I feel stress building, and think ok later I can do this, and it will help. That need usually build over a bit of time. And still, at other times, I'm anticipating a stressful event, and I do it beforehand, because I almost feel that doing it beforehand will give me strength to handle it.

Do most people SI on impulse, or do others put thought into it like I do?

Often, it's an impulse thing.
Sometimes I do plan it in advance - I don't usually act on it but it is comforting to me to plan it - but sometimes, I do act on it.

Typically, I think when I've pre planned it, I don't always get the same "release" from it though.

Mine is impulse. I try to avoid it but once I hit that point there's no stopping it and that's when I reach for it.

Typically I plan it as well, or at the least I know its a high possibility that I'll engage in it.

I truly believe I sh out of anxiety/frustration (T finds this "interesting") so if I'm highly stressed out, I think "I can sh and it'll make me feel better" and i'll know that at some point at home i need to take a few minutes out to myself so that I can do it. I'll even go as far as to make sure the kids (my little cousins) are fed, my mom doesn't need me for anything and everyone's settled and content so that I won't be disturbed.

Mine was generally more on impulse but I definitely know of a lot of people who planned it as well.

** Trigg warn **

I guess I *plan* whenever I purchase "supplies" (I do not reuse dirty blades).

But I also do not *plan* when I go to the mens room with a scissors to do some trimming (NOT harming - just reducing some ugly/excessive arm/chest hair) - but when I nicked myself a few times - it turned into a session.

Ahhh RELIEF.

Good point. I don't reuse them as well (granted i have maybe 2-3 times but not normally) so that is yet another way that I plan.

That's interesting that you get everyone settled first. I live alone, but have a dog. I don't know how, but she knows what cabinet I keep supplies in, and when I open it she freaks out. This should be enough to stop me you'd think. But now I just have to make sure she is fed, and put outside for awhile so I can get the release I need without having her around trying to stop me.

Nowadays when I'm triggered the need is impulsive. Though I haven't done it on a while. Often, if I can control it enough I will say to myself, if you still feel like this by tomorrow morning (or whatever time limit you set), then I will do it.
That's the only planning I really do. I obsess over it sometimes and before it get's out of hand sometimes I will try to keep preoccupied to take my mind off of it.

Yeah. Maybe that's what I mean by planning it. I obsess, so I make sure I have supplies, etc. And I do the same thing. I tell myself to wait, and if it's still stressful, I can do it later. Rarely though does later come, and I make the choice not to. Maybe I'm addicted to the release it gives me. But I'd be horrified if people knew.

Yes! A few people I know are aware of it. Unfortunately, when I was hypomanic, I basically opened up to certain people about it. Not a shining moment for me as I really think that helped to ruin a friendship.

Good for you that you can fight the impulse to!

I do this. Especially before when I cut, I would plan when and where to harm. Things would get so stressful and become so hard to handle that I'd feel like SI was all I had to combat those feelings. Then I would start planning it all in my head and would actually receive comfort from that. You're not alone in this.

It depends on what is going on. When something happens that I can't deal with in a good way it is very impulsive. Other times I plan it out. More often than not it is a choice and I just want to do it.

When you plan it, do you find that when a good time comes that you have talk yourself into self harming?

When I say I am going to do it, I feel guilty if I don't, so then now I have to talk myself into self harming. It does however take me a while to make myself SI.

Sorry, just trying to figure some things out, not high-jack a thread
