I considered myself shy. But more so I was socially awkward and out-of-touch with the mainstream. The book is more like an older brother "showing you the ropes." it was partly about being aware of body language., which @MuddyBoots suggested might help. Body language isn't all about learning to "read people" but also about what you project. Standing slouched over with your hands in your pockets and flat affect on your face conveys a much different message than gently smiling with a twinkle in your eye, leaning forward with confidence in your stance and reaching out to almost touch the other person's forearm. At that very moment, you want the person to know that you think they're the most important person in your life.* Pay attention to the guys that the ladies seem to swoon for. What do they wear? How do they carry themselves? What's the inflection of their voice? Mimic their actions. See if that changes anything. * Story about that may follow later.
