When you fall asleep. Do you ever wake up within 30 secs to 1 min of falling asleep like your whole body has convulsed or something and shook you out of your sleep. Its hard for me to describe. But when i fall asleep sometimes i wake up pretty soon after as if someone shook my whole body all at once then i am up for no reason. Then i fall asleep again soon after. sometimes it happens 2 or 3 times. Or it happens just once and not again for the rest of the night. Sometimes I also wake up every 1 or 2 hrs for no reason. its not like someone is in there waking me up. I just do. Its quite annoying.
Anyone ever have this happen to them? ![]() |

Maus5321,
I have had severe insomnia since childhood. I often go three days without sleep, one day with, then three without, again, over and over for months. On that one night I do sleep, what you have described, exactly, is how I go into that slumber, but for me, the jerking out of sleep that happens within the first 30 seconds, goes on for at least two hours. It is awful. I was so excited , to have read your post here, for I have never heard of anyone else that has this same problem, in anyway, like me. In fact, so quickly have I keyboarded, my response to your thread, that I have no idea if I have made any sense. Oh, and guess what? I am too tired to up-scroll, and check! That woke me up a bit, thanks Maus, -Fleeing Bellocq, Nightfall Nonconformist of the Mission District |

The sudden awakening is something I have had my entire life, usually once, maybe twice. Sometimes I'll have a flash dream of falling accompanying this sudden awakening.
I was diagnosed with sleep apnea back in 2004 when I was about 90 lbs heavier and when you stop breathing, like with apnea, you body sends an adrenaline shot to wake you up. This awakening could be tied to sleep apnea, or another sleep disorder. I used to sleepwalk and or sleeptalk when I was younger. If you wake up and change position a lot at night, then you probably do this at least 2x more than you remember, according to the sleep specialist I talked with. If a you are chronically tired, you should talk to a doctor for sure. |

Waking from sleep startled or suddenly indicates the mind inability to relax to the point for restful sleep. This can be due to multiple variables. Stress, trauma, medications, etc. The main thing is recognizing you're unable to sleep soundly. Your mind isn't shutting down enough to allow you to sleep soundly. For now decrease any caffeine intake and talk with your physician about it. Begin journaling when you awake to help process some of your thoughts. Begin focusing on processing some of your stressors, concerns, fears, etc. You'll then begin to see a decline in this occurring. I hope this helps some.

@ fleeing: GLad i could give you someone to relate to. I have done this for as long as i can remember, I am glad i am not alone.
@YYzadd I usually do the jerk awake thing in the begining then from there i usually wake up every 1 to 2 hours and reposition. Or i do as i did last night/this morning i will constantly changes positions trying to fall asleep but to know avail. I use to sleep walk as a child to sometimes. It was weird i would talk to my mom but it was almost like a dream and i could sometimes remember it. @whiteclouds: As far as i can tell there are know clear thoughts i am thinking about that would be able to write down and figure out other then i want sleep. I don't remember any reason to wake,. I use to have the falling dreams and i still get those but not as often it seems. |

My youngest daughter has slept walked since she was old enough to walk. She is 10 years old and still does. She looks like she is awake, but the lights are not really on, she will respond, but again she is like the HAL 9000 with have of the memory sticks pulled
![]() The is another sleep issue I refer to as the the "Slide Show". Often when I have a lot on my mind, but I'll lay down and close my eyes then the show begins. Flashes of everything I can think of. I feel like I never really go to sleep. It can last for hours or most of the night. I'll toss and turn the entire time. This was also an ADD trait that I learned about with my ADD dx in 2009. After I began my Adderall treatment sleeping for the most part is Much Better. I can make due on 4-6 hours sleep better than I used to on 8 or 9 hours. If you are having trouble sleeping, definitely go talk to a doctor about it. Good luck ![]() |

@yyzadd: That's why when i said i didn't really have anything concerning me I could write down. Its because when i am like asleep but not it seems like. my mind is like running through things at random but know clear cut reason as to what it is. I mean i have trouble with thoughts and focusing ans stuff during the day. But i mean when its time to sleep its like party in my head along with the other things i mentioned earlier.
My mind sometimes will race so much going form thought to thought to thought I will just get angry because i can't turn the light switch off and sleep. then iw ill lay there angry all night until the time comes i have to get up for. BUt before i get angry i just toss and turn. Then get angry. |

I'd be falling asleep driving home from work. When I get home, there is a lot to do with kids, dinner, homework and all that, but after all of that was over and I "Could" go to bed, I'd be freaking Wide Awake... Very cruel indeed... Who knew stimulants would help me sleep??? They slow the spinning mind down and allow focus and this allows you to go to sleep. I'd recommend reading through the ADD posts and if things sound familiar, ask your doctor about it. |

@yzzadd I did make a post a but its long winded. And here is an example of the way i am during the day. Cliff notes.
Current Symptoms: *Impulsive spending, When i have the money. *Racing thoughts constant and they bounce from topic to topic. *I feel mentally exhausted a lot, but can't stop. This is hard to explain, but if it's been a rough day then I feel super tired physical/mentally. Like at work i am fine in the morning then i am tired as i come to the end. I come home and its like someone stuck a new battery in me. especially when i try to sleep and i am dog *** tired. *Constant fidgeting, like I have to move my legs or hands, get itchy sometimes, bite my lip... *I forget what I want to say in conversation a lot... even in mid sentence or I answer my own question *I find myself impulsively talking, like interrupting (def when I'm excited) or getting embarrassed at what I said to someone after saying it *I try to get organized( I don't bother with this because i will leave things unfinished and move on before they are done.) *I lose stuff constantly(Keys, Wallet, Phone, Homework, paperwork) Usually my dad finds what i am missing. *I feel like I can't focus or it is so difficult to focus *I know I waste a ton of time. I'll be on the internet with maybe 10 different pages going *I really hate being interrupted. if i am finally settled on somethign then someone comes in and bugs me. *In certain circumstances I have to be in control, such as I have to drive. Do something engaging or else i will just wander even if your talking straight to me. I will miss what you say completely. * I will set my mind to something on and impulse and no matter what you say you will not sway me off my decision. I am gonna do it no matter the cost. |

I always daydreamed in grade school. Never really payed attention. Some days for no reason i would be super hyper. My friends would be like dude what the matter with you. In high school i Just got labeled as lazy when i started struggling and failing classes. Because i was smart enough but i would not do the homework or study. But no matter how har di tried i would just stare at the paper and never get anywhere and my mind would just wander. Almost like if it was to hard or required sustained mental effort almost. Or i would hear what was being said to me but none of it would register no matter how hard i tried. Or i would read something like 5 or 6 times and never get it.

Ask you GP for a reference to a Psychiatrist who specializes in ADD/ADHD. I don't remember if I read how old you are, but don't procrastinate on this one, because if you have ADD the is a 90% chance that meds with help you a lot. Meds changed my life after my diagnosis. I'm hacked off that I did not find out about ADD earlier in life, but you just have to move forword. I'm not a doctor, just a programmer, but I talk to a doctor about your symptoms. Feel free to pm me if you like... |

Maus5321 I can relate! Just in the last few days I am just on the verge of falling asleep and then 'bam' I am up looking around, wondering why I am looking around. This happens just when I am going to sleep, but only maybe the first 10-20 mins, then I might fall asleep, and I may just relax and rest with no REM sleep or dreams. Its VERY annoying!

After my first Adderall, within 30 minutes I felt "Good" for maybe the first time ever. I had NO Clue as to what ADD/ADHD was (Other than the joke stereotypes) until I read my first book on the subject. I read it with a Highlighter because of all the things that matched me to a "T". If you see a psychiatrist, make sure they are a specialist in ADD. Good luck ![]() |

Also the thing that i find hard to explain to my any psychiatrist or T is that \. My anxiety symptoms and depression seemed to have come later. BUt the symptoms i described here to you earlier. Were there4 before. I just never really noticed until i found this site. I have low self esteem. I have 0 trust in my abilities what so ever. I could do something 100 percent and find a way to make it not good. Nothing ever pleases me. But when i see the p and t's they just latch onto the anxiety and depression because its right there face. So when i go back and say i am not noticing a difference. They well lets change a med or it has not been long enough blah blah blah. Then when i went to talk to my T you she says lets talk about what bothering. I had some things to talk about but they were about things way in the past that had to do with my mom and dads divorce etc. I went through what i could but then she was like whats bothering you now after like 3 or 4 sessions. I really had no topics to tell her because there was nothing in my life that was sticking out as one big thing bothering. Its more of everything is bothering but nothing is bothering me. How do you explain that. Then i mention the that my mind bounces all over thought to thought to thought. then they ask me what do i think about. I am like i don;t know. It moves so fast time and then i forget what i was thinking about. Then they just say well your not exhibiting the signs. Its almost like the person talking to me needs to know how to draw the stuff out because i am not capable of doing it. aaarrggghh its frustrating just talking about it here.......
![]() I just started a temporary job in a call center. I am not doing bad at the job but its insanity trying to keep track of everything that is being said to me on the phone while typing and not wandering off lol......Most of the time i don;t remember the person's name when i ask for it. Sorry for being so long winded. |
