I often have trouble sleeping through the night, i usually wake up at around 3 in the morning and have trouble falling back asleep for almost an hour. When I do sleep through the night I end up waking up early in the morning and can't fall back asleep even though i'm tired. Anyone have any tips to either help me go back to sleep when i do wake up or any tips for before i go to bed so i can sleep through the night?

Hello purpleninja: I often have sleep difficulties similar to what you describe. However, I'm an older person. So I don't know if anything I would suggest would be of benefit to you. I presume you're following the usual recommended practices such as staying off of the computer or smart phone for a couple of hours prior to bedtime, avoiding caffeine, getting plenty of exercise, etc.

When I wake up during the night, & can't get back to sleep, I get up & do walking meditation. I walk slowly around-&-around our dark & quiet home focusing light attention on each foot as it touches the floor. Thoughts come-&-go. I simply watch them arise-&-fade at their own pace. I'll typically walk for around an hour but sometimes for as much as two hours. When I go back to bed I almost always go back to sleep.

Three o'clock in the morning actually has a deeper significance if you care to believe. It has different names but it is "the demonic hour" as Jesus Christ was crucified at three in the afternoon, so like turning a crucifix upside down represents the devil, 3am the opposite of Jesus being killed is the devils hour, just to be perverse. So I would speculate the spiritual world is more accessible then. So, waking up may mean you are afraid of that otherness. Just an alternative view for you to consider. It may be old fish wife's tale......who knows
