Is it wrong to choose your own friends?

I've known so many people in real life who have tried to control my choice of friends, particularly my father. He allowed no David Bowie or other comtemporary music in the house. He gave me such a tiny amount of pocket money that I was unable to buy anything with it except save it up for my parents presents. If I didnt save every penny of it he was furious. No books were allowed in the house except for classical books.

Perhaps my med "issues" are causing memories to emerge more than usual.

My dad was like that too, but you know... it made me incredibly independent at a very early age. As soon as I was able to make my own money and support myself, I was outta there and never looked back. In fact, I overcompensate 20 years later by ALWAYS paying for HIS meals, etc, to show that I'll never be as stingy as he was.

Was your mother overprotective in some ways (probably of herself and the lies they lived) and only knowing how to express love with food but stingy? And very passive but suddenly becoming completely rejecting and into "assertivenes"? Mine was.
