I just read an article online tonight about this subject. I'd post a link, but the site only gives a sample teaser of the article, then you have to register and either pay to subscribe or get a "day pass". In any case, the article talks about how sexual abuse/rape in the military is on the rise. I can speak from personal experience that this is true. One of my strongest memories of being in the US Army was all of the propositions and sexually related contact and inuendos. It started before I even got to Basic Training--the recruiters made comments on how I dressed. It was summer, so it was more skimpy--short shorts and tops. One recruiter went farther than that and invited me to his place and several times tried (or hoped) to have sex with me. Another recuiter--a Master Sergent, superior to the others--invited me to a "party for recruits" several hours away. I had nothing else to do that weekend so I thought why not? It was a trick to get me in bed with him! I wouldn't do anything and he eventually stopped and aplogized. Later once I was offically in the Army, other sergents would do the same. I think it might break military "law" for recruiters to have relations with recruits, but I'm not positive. I don't think there is anything against relations between most people once a person graduates, but I don't really know for sure. And one other thing for sure, the military does not seem to regularly practice fairness or take sexual misconduct seriously. The military "legal system" needs improvement. But, that's just my opinion.
