Ok, Im preggers for the first time and have been procrastinating about seeing the dr. (Im petrified!) NEVER BEEN to a OBGYN ever. So now Im confused.
Should I see the GYNO first? Or the OB? Or does it really matter? I feel so silly asking these things, but honestly do not know. Will the OB be mad if I see them (I made an appointment to see the OB). Like I said, I feel silly asking these things, but rather know so I can change if needed. Also, what happens? Im terrified! |

Congratulations on becoming pregnant!!
![]() If you weren't pregnant then you would receive a gyno. exam. Some women like my self prefer a female doctor. The first time I had one, was when I was 18 - I was mortified and embarassed. But now that I'm older it doesn't bother me at all. Usually they have you fill out a history and they ask you if you have any problems. The doctor does a breast exam(feeling for lumps). Then the doctor inserts a speculum which is expandable - so the doctor can see the cervic. At this point the doctor takes what looks like a long cutip and swabs the cervix, where it's sent to a lab to screen for cancer cells. Once that's done the doctor feels around the lower stomach for any abnormalities. It really not bad at all. For doctors it's just medical just like any other part of the body. You won't be going through the internal exam while you're pregnant though. Usually once a woman has children - she usually gets over the embarassment regarding that part of her body. When you're in labour there no time to be shy LOL. Best of luck with your pregnancy - make sure you eat healthy and take a prenatal vitamin.

I was always under the impression that they were the same thing? My doctor is an OBGYN.

So is mine! But a gynea can be a gynea on their own, but are not qualified to deliver babies......an obstetrician is both and delivers babies. They can also perform cesarean sections if need be..... Congratualtions of becoming pregnant(to the thread starter)! Yes, it can be a bit frightening, for it is a new experience for you, but get to your doc as soon as you can so you can start getting your ultrasounds and so on......and Lynn is right, your doc will refer you to an OBGYN. Take good care of you and good luck! ![]() ![]() ![]() Michah

Thanks yall! Went in today and heard the babys heart beat! It was so amazing!
She wanted to do the "scary" exams, but freaked out and she stopped immediately and said we will do it next week. I want to read up on it all and just try to find ways to relax through it (I was abused sexually when I was 16 and just freaked out horribly). Thank you all for the support and letting me know whats going to happen. ![]() |

Thats so great! You're making my clock tick haha! My OBGYN allows me to insert the probe myself whenever they do those kinds of ultrasounds. I have PCOS so I have had to have A LOT of crazy procedures and ultrasounds and they let me do some of it myself so that I'm more comfortable. Maybe, explain that you're not comfortable with certain aspects of the procedure and ask if there is some way to get around it?
