Hey all

I am currently suffering from severe depression and one thing of the major is that I have no interest in getting a job right now, like my enthusiasm is not there and mentally I am not well enough, but everyone is saying how wonderful a job would be and that I will be "cured" from Depression.

But I just don't know what to do with myself as I am feeling worse and nobody is helping me.

I am not lazy and I tend to believe that depression fluctuates from having and bad days so I don't see this "recovery" I just feel the same everyday nothing changes, I keep active, I keep busy but nothing satisfies me.

Hi there! I see you joined this month so I'd just like to welcome you again to PC!
Do you see a therapist? Perhaps one can help you with your depression. There is also disability that you can apply for! Hopefully someone can give you more information on that.

Aces to a therapist takes ages and I mean ages nhs said it could be 18 months or I pay for it myself. I have also got the option of private councelling which is rather expensive and because I am on ESA I don't have much money.

I have had enough of going down the meds route they just don't work or help me whatsoever.
So I have had enough

hi,
I am also suffering from same problem but loosing faith and self confidence is not good to you. Do hardwork and be patient , god will definitely help you but for that first you should come out from depression and start searching for a new way for finding the job. AS soon as you reaches to your destination.

Therapists help with depressive symptoms, but rehabilitation counselors can help you find a way to work while experiencing depression.

I can understand the difficulty working or doing anything really during a depressive episode. I work one full-time job and one part-time job and when the depression starts, I have to cut back on hours and work. This does not make me the best employee, but I do enough to keep my job. When the episode ends, sometimes I can resume my work level but sometimes I am just not motivated either. Perhaps you should try to volunteer somewhere once a week. I am not sure what you like to do in your spare time, but I like playing with babies and reading, so if I had time to volunteer, I might volunteer once a week at a day care center or at the local library. These things don't require a lot of energy and I get out of the house and into the sunshine if only for 2 hours. Good luck!

Hi, Nightworld, welcome to PsychCentral (PC). How do you keep busy and active? Is there anything there that would work for a job or occupation to get you started toward work? Presumably you do what you like the most? I would try to volunteer somewhere or get an entrance job with a company that did something related to what you do to keep active/busy. If you are moving along and keeping active/busy, then it doesn't really matter what you are doing? You might as well either try to get paid for it or get more skills relative to it, etc.? Maybe with a bit of money you could afford some private counselling and being out "in the world" a bit more might show you something that could interest you more? Not much can change if you don't do something different?

That's the thing, right now I am not in the right frame of mind to work yet everyone is saying how work cures depression so I can't win. The actual process of looking for work is actually getting me into such a state that it's making me feel dreadful I regret waking up each day. I regret turning on my computer or emails and seeing the job centres website and others.

I keep busy by going walking into town keeping my mind active with activities and going to clubs yet I don't feel any better. Most days going to town to look for work really triggers off the low mood and crap, yet I feel under pressure from myself and others to get work

Hi Nightworld, don't pay attention to those who tell you to get a job and the depression will go away. If you get a job in your field of work you run the risk of ruining your reputation if you don't deliver. If you can afford to not work, take the time to heal yourself. I was at a very low point in March, I had lost all hope. My "family" invited me to stay with them and give me the time to take care of myself. I've worked on a type of therapy called Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. I purchased the workbook, but it might be available at your library. If not, I understand there is a website for DBT. Currently I'm exploring mindfulness and foods that are anti-inflammatory. I was very skeptical about both things, but I have spent the past two days researching them and there appears to be scientific data supporting both. You can research both on the web. Mindfulness is a version of meditation. The anti-inflammatory diet (lots of fatty fish, dark leafy vegetables, berries, no sugar, complex carbohydrates, etc) will help reduce inflammation in your body. There is research linking inflammation to depression. My challenge when I'm very depressed is taking the first step. Perhaps you can get out of your environment for a weekend and use that time to begin exploring the web for ideas you can use. The physical separation from your current environment may give you the breathing space you need. As for the job, volunteering is always an option, or you can look for a part time job or sign up with an employment agency who will send you to job sites which you can accept or decline based on how you are feeling.
Good luck and keep us posted.
