Work has been going good, I have some issues of my own. I am doing help and a lab assistant in the student center (away from doing call center), I feel as though I have issues trying to help people with their computer problems. I don't want to feel codependent on my two full time coworkers and feels like I am coming to them for little things in the student center.
I have students asking me about printer problems, software problems, etc. I don't have access to a lot of tools only very little as a temp employee (it would be a long time before I could get any board approved position) and it's hard to understand people's computer problems. I am trying hard to listen to every detail they ask of me. I am used to working on my own computer issues at home....with my dad that I find it difficult at times trying to understand someone else's problems. I never worked in the IT using a lot of problem solving methods and I am getting some IT experience which I am grateful for. I graduated college in 2010 and no chance for an actual IT job 4 years ago. Trying to tap into my knowledge and the things I have done at home seems to go blank at work all the time. My codependency from home is kicking in at work like I said being dependent on my coworkers to help me in the student center and I want to do it on my own until I really need help. There are other stuff we need to go over as we haven't had a chance to go over yet because we have been so busy. It is OTJ, I am learning everything and it is a lot of learning since there wasn't any training before starting the job. I just need to use my own problem-solving methods, it's difficult not to take the mouse from students and show them what you are talking about visually when words are not enough and if you do that; they will expect you to do it for them all the time. Am I over reacting? I don't have someone to talk to about this, didn't have a chance to talk to my boyfriend about this. Any tips/advice? |

Hello, ladytiger. Does your employer know what is going on? Have you stated you would like more help?

Hi, ladytiger.
I wonder if, when you were hired to work as an assistant with no access to a lot of tools and no training, there could be an expectation for you to be completely self-sufficient. Do your co-workers know and understand your position? I think the only way you can develop a problem-solving skill set is through learning from your colleagues what you haven't already encountered in this situation. Hopefully your colleagues are understanding of this. Good luck! |

No, haven't spoken to my boss. No, there was no training and the reasons for not having access to a lot of tools is because District got into trouble last November, so now they refuse to share any of their tools with the temps in IT with the local colleges only the full time people have access to all the tools.
I was told the issues in the student center are a case by case situation, so having training to a number of different issues that can arise would have been difficult. My coworkers know I never worked in a help desk job in the past and told employer that my functional resume is based on what I have done at school when I was a student. I don't have any computer experience from any job in the past. I was told of issues that can arise in the student center with the students on the computers. I forgot to mention I wanted to get more computer training before I was hired but going through the State to get the money was difficult doing all this crap for them. I wanted to go to through training schools, they are over a grand but the State would have paid for it if they didn't send me through a lot of hoops and loops! I never had a chance to get any training done on my own. I don't see that happening right now as I am gonna update my resume to find a 2nd job in the mornings and the evenings will be working at the school when the Fall classes start. I spoke to my coworker doing call center (she doesn't know anything about computers) telling her what I have been feeling and so far that I wish there was training before I got put into the call center then the student center helping students, but there was no budget money. |
