Hi,
I took the emotional intelligence quiz and confirmed I have low emotional intelligence (which I already knew). I hired a job coach and paid him $200 an hour to help improve my EQ and saw about 25%improvement. However the improvement diminished when I became stressed, over worked and could no longer afford the job coach. Are there any therapies or excercises I can do to increase my EQ? I have like five EQ books. They have helped but I feel something is missing( the often don't address the underlying cause of low EQ but rather jump to the solution). I feel I need help spreading up for myself improve my get too emotional maturity. Maybe some inner child work Thanks |

I find practising mindfulness helps me to recognise my emotions, and recognise the emotions of others, therefore helping people to become more emotionally intelligent, as it helps people to deal with their emotions better aswell, without suppressing them, you could go to a meditation class which is usually free, or go on a retreat which you may have to pay for, and it gives people very good strategies for staying well, mentally.
I feel that a job coach is just in it for the money, but a Buddhist monk is in it to help others suffer less. When I started mindfulness, it helped my emotional intelligence massively, give it a go, especially if you can do it for free.

25% improvement is pretty impressive. How much improvement do you want?
You have low emotional intelligence you say, but I expect you score high in other areas. I wonder if it not about achieving a balance; enough emotional intelligence to balance your other higher preforming areas would be realistic perhaps? However if you want to or believe you can be good in all areas, no harm in trying. |

quizzes aren't always a good reflection on you anyway, because you could answer them differently each time you do it.
And if you had a coach, or likewise with any therapy, or mindfulness retreat's or classes, I tend to be good at what I'm doing, then afterwards slip back down again, but overall I have improved slightly - so I think this is normal, it is for me anyway - In the mindfulnesss retreats, they talk about diligence, forcing yourself to be mindful reguarly, and this is something I fail miserably at, but each retreat I go to, it helps massively. And rather supressing emotions, it's more about being aware of them.
