I have a terrible boss. I work in a small business and unfortunately the business owner is NOT good at running her business. A lot of that stress falls onto me. I become the go to person to handle things. Unfortunately I get very little guidance from my boss and I get in trouble if things aren't just so.
My boss can also bring down the mood of the entire clinic. When you ask her a question she does not answer you like an adult. She instead snaps at you and makes you feel so small. Every employee feels upset and wore down by the end of the day. She also gets her employees in trouble for things that yesterday were ok. She changes her mind from one day to the next and masked rules impossible to follow. I have been there four years and I have seen the entire staff change many times. Turn over is crazy where I work and it's suppose to be a good place to work. I was pushed to the edge where I had to have my doctor prescribe me anxiety medications because I was having a breakdown almost every day. I would go to the bathroom and cry... A lot. I feel there is no other option but to try to find a new job. Which isn't easy. I've applied to many but hardly hear back for an interview. The thing is, my resume looks good for the career I am currently in. And there aren't many jobs on the market for this career. I love the work but get very stressed out because of my boss. She literLly creates drama. I think she likes it :S Anyways this was more of a vent session than anything. I had a horrible day today, as did all of my coworkers. Hopefully tomorrow will be better. |

Hi Arnie91...
I'm so sorry, your boss sounds awful. No wonder you're crying everyday and stressed out, it sounds like an impossible situation, where the rules keep changing and no matter what you do, it's wrong. Yuck. That's awful. Sadly, I think you're right... I don't think you're going to get this person to change. I don't think she has any incentive to change. I think she probably doesn't even realize or care that she's the problem. So, I hope you keep looking for a new job... and I hope you find something really amazing with a much better boss soon, so you can get out. Have you talked to anyone about coping skills in the mean time, to help you get through the day? |

![]() It depends on where you work but are you able to depend on your co-workers (and them on you) as much as possible and only deal with her when necessary? I remember from a job I had with a useless boss (not necessarily mean but just didn't have the knowledge and experience for her job!) that I just worked with my co-workers for peer support and supervision and only went to her when absolutely necessary. Also depending on where you work but is it possible to try and get your tasks in writing? That way if she tries to change her mind the next day you have tangible evidence of what you were doing and why. I really hope you can find something else soon in your job search! |

I have a similar boss and am wondering what makes them that way. Do you think they are overwhelmed in positions of leadership?

I have totally been there. While I don't have a boss that put the work on me, I do have a boss who creates drama and picks favorites. She will let people she likes take the day off just because. I work the front desk at a busy doctors office she had my coworker in her office for an hour and a half talking about her personal life when I had a line of patients out the door that needed checked in for their appointments!
I think it is ridiculous that you are in this position. I don't think you should give up hope just yet! Keep looking for jobs and keep applying! One of these days you will get a call! |
