I feel similarly sometimes. I'm a technical writer, but my background is not in a technical field. I have a BA in French and an MA in English. So I know how to write, but I'm supposed to write about technical things I don't really understand. Luckily, usually I only have to edit things engineers write and I can usually handle that.
Doing tutorials and learning on your own is a good idea golden_eve. |

Thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
I probably should mention that I found out just a couple days ago that one of our PM's turned in notice because of the stress and overload. He's a good guy. I don't PM anymore. In my line of work, PM roles are executed differently than when that was my gig. Long story short, I got an email Monday am from my boss inquiring if I would be opposed to "picking up" some PM and Coordinator responsibilities. I was flattered, but curious as to why, but his email saide something along the lines of "...due to changing needs of the company....", which totally pushes my "CLP cares" button. I didn't want to just respond negatively, as the man just re-hired me. Then a couple days ago when I found out by chance that the PM turned in notice, the only thing I could think of was the last PTSD episode I had from a job I had last year in which it was proven that they hired me for a postiion I wanted, but they just wanted me in the door to head up some other group in the role I was leaving to join them. Just that the way they did it was by pulling on my heart-strings. UGGGHHH I jsut don't have much trust right now. I want to concentrate on me, and I don't want to jeopardize this job. I really need it. I am the only income...sick or not. Of course they don't know that.

That all sounds very sensible to me, Eve.
It doesn't sound like there's anything you feel you couldn't learn, given time. Like... heart surgery or something... or driving a truck... This issue is all about how you package it. If you're unapologetic about the fact that you missed out on certain things while self-employed, nobody will bat an eyelid. Maybe have a few phrases up your sleeve, like Wow. It's been really illuminating to see how isolated I was while freelancing. But I'm a fast learner. I'm catching up.' That kind of thing. It should ease your fear that they'll say you misrepresented yourself at interview. You didn't know! Just explain it with confidence. You're already working on your development. They'll see that they chose the right person. |

TY Purple.... this is helpful. ![]() I think I can catch up easily enough today and during the week. Yes, I will have to be prepped for them possibly noticing. Good news is, I don't believe I misrepresented myself during the interview, though it was over two months ago now that I interviewed. I am familiar with the tools they mentioned, I've used them all for certain things, and they didn't press me too much for specifics, or the extent of my use of these tools. I think they made some assumptions, simply based on my years of experience in the field. |

Eve, I love your Bob Marley quote, "You never know how strong you are until being strong is your only choice". So true. You seem pretty gritty and smart to me, probably because somewhere deep down you know you are strong, have had to be.
It isn't what someone already knows that makes them a good employee or suitable for most jobs ... it is their willingness to learn and their good moral character that count above all else. Lean on those qualities because you've already got 'em. Let them shine! (And ask for help to fill in any gaps you can't figure out on your own with a honest, humble approach when you need it :-) Certain path to success. (((Hugs))) |

![]() Love your username, btw! You make a really good point! Yes, I do have those qualities, although, I admit that I learned some bad habits while working from home and while working under a boss who didn't encourage me, manage me well, or motivate me. In fact, she did the complete opposite, and that has seriously harmed my career growth. I stopped being motivated, and my growth went downhill over two years time. Now I have to make up for the loss of time and the loss of knowledge that I should have gained during that time..... Still, yes, I am now motivated to learn and my habits will improve now that I am back in an office, visible to everyone. Basically, I slacked off for two years because my former boss had also bullied me -- ARGH. That really pisses me off to no end that I lost momentum back then. Wish it could have been different, but you can't change the past. Anyways, thank you.... I really appreciate your post! ![]() |
