I have extreme anxiety when it comes to washing dishes with my hands leaves me almost completely unable to do so. The first and only time I tried to wash dishes my sister made me do it when I was in middle school and I literally broke down crying and had a full panic attack. The idea of nasty bits of food particles floating around in the dishwater sickens me and turns my stomach. I can wash small dishes without food waste on it (or something small like bread crumbs) but yeah washing the more dirty stuff is where I have a serious problem. I still live with my parents right now so I don't have to worry about dishes but whenever I move out a problem might persist.

Sorry you have this problem. Can you wear rubber gloves? Rinsing the dishes before and changing the sponge often helps with the gross factor.

It is kinda gross. One thing I do is pre-rinse. You can also wear gloves. Also there are lots of different tools. One is a stick with soap in the handle and a sponge at the end - a friend of mine used it. You dont even make a pot of dishwater, you just wash each item and rinse it.
Thanks for this!

I was wearing gloves when I had the panic attack. I can't even touch that water without gloves on. Those are some interesting ideas hankster, I think those will help a lot. Especially if I wash everything individually with running water instead of filling the sink with water and washing everything in that. It'll use more water but I might feel a little more comfortable that way. Also the sponge on a stick sounds really nice since I don't like touching that either.

I sympathize with you but washing dishes by hand actually relaxes me. Maybe it's the hot water on my hands. I remove the food particles with a scrubber and set them aside. Then I wash the dishes in hot soapy water. I don't have a good understanding of OCD but I don't mean to invalidate your feelings on this. Everyone has their hangups.

I don't fill the sink with water, I wash under running water. I feel for you, on the ickiness of sticking your hands into the water of dirty particles.

At work, I wear rubber gloves, when I need to wash the dishes. ((which turns out to less, since I am the boss, but it still needs to get done.))
Thanks for this!

I'm so glad I'm not the only one. My parents made me wash dishes for the first time in a while the other night and I got very nauseous. I think I'll try some of these things too

omg I just read what I wrote. No... I don't have a huge pile of food particles I've set aside on the kitchen counter. I bet that really sounds gross
I use the scrubber sponge thingy to scrape the food off of each dish into the sink under running water while running the garbage disposal. After a dish is scrubbed it is placed aside on the counter or into a container of hot soapy water. When I'm done there is really nothing much in the water.
If you think about it, there really is no way of getting around having bits of food left on pans, dishes, or utensils.
