So I've been reading that Xanax works very fast, and you can take it for long periods of time. If this Paroxetine medicine doesn't work, how can I ask the dr for Xanax without seeming like I want to sell it on the streets or something? Cause I won't. I just want something that works fast, and I've been reading about Paxil horror stories.

Lots of pdocs don't prescribe xanax because it is very addictive.
I have been taking it since 1999 though and back then I was taking 2 mg tablets several times a day. Now I seldom need it in daytime and just take 2-3 mg to help me sleep. Some people get good effect from as little as 0.25-0.5 mg so you might ask if you can trial it low dose.

Paroxetine and xanax are different types of drugs. One is an SSRI and on is a Benzo. Are you treating depression or anxiety? Xanax should not be an easy drug to get because it can be so harmful, but Im not sure what the laws are where you are. There are many other good medications out there.

Asking for a med that is used as a recreational drug is probably a sure method of not getting it. Not saying that's good... just saying.

If the SSRI is not working well for you, you can ask your doctor if you could try a different class of drugs, or something aimed more at anxiety than at depression. When I first started talking with my p-doc, I already knew that SSRI's and I didn't get along well, so I told my p-doc that right up front and so he started me on benzo's right off the bat. However, he didn't start me on Xanax...that was the 3rd drug I tried and the one that has worked best for me. I'm on a very low dose 3 times per day, every day, and it's working well with no side effects.

I understand that but as Yoda said, doctors are reluctant to prescribe benzos. Doctors are reluctant to prescribe requested meds anyway but something that is a popular drug for recreational use and that may cause dependence is likely to make a doc even more reluctant. I think there are people who would benefit greatly from a benzo but aren't getting one due to this reluctance.

You just don't ask. You bring up your symptoms and troubles, and then, they, knowing your health history, physical and emotional, will prescribe what works best for your body.
Fast acting, or not, it's up to the prescribing doctor to know what's best for you. And by fast acting, being on it myself, as a long term anxiety med, it's not like *poof*, oh wow, I feel better. It's just there. Don't feel a thing, just know that anxious feeling is not there, too. |

Hi. I would just be honest with you doctor about the degree of your anxiety...and you're curious if a medication like xanax will work. The worst thing he can say is no. I started on xanax in december as needed. My doctor has been open about it...and knows I do not abuse it. We just keep the communication lines open. I take 0.5mgs as needed. Good luck!

I had no problem getting xanax from my PCP. I showed him that I was not abusing it and he renewed it. I use it about 3x a week. It does not work fast enough. It can take up to 30 min to shut down any negative coping behaviors.

I use an SSRI (zoloft) and Lorazapam (same class as Xanax) for "emergencies". Which is to say, if my anxiety peaks I'll resort to Lorazapam but will sometimes go weeks without needing it.
I asked my PDoc for it while also bringing up my addiction concerns as I have a history of drug abuse. We made a sort of agreement as to how I would use it and she watches for signs that I might be abusing it. I'm not, she sees that, so we're all good.
