So I have this female pdoc that works at the University Health Services, and she's fairly "popular" I suppose... pretty hard to get an appt with, but SO worth it. Anyways, the last time I saw her we debated the topic of me trying out some medication to help control my anxiety (this was about 3 weeks ago), and at that point I thought that I could just try and get through without it.

Well, since then, my anxiety has been absolutely THROUGH the roof. It's been so bad that I've had to leave classes, and felt like I was being completely consumed with it.

And so, I called Health Services and asked if they could tell me when she was on the walk-in. (You should also know that i get very anxious around dr's!) And they told me that they could no longer give out that information??? And according to my old T, they don't even give out that information to Counseling Services?? And so today I went over to Health Services and asked the lady who was working at the reception desk who was on the Walk-In clinic today. It wasn't my dr. So I asked her if it were at all possible to let me know when mine would be working, and then I explained my situation. But still, they wouldn't tell me! The Dr's...

Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't their job to HELP people? I'm going to see my pdoc for anxiety medication, and the receptionist knows that I don't do well with other dr's, so now I have to wait until March to get my prescription!

I honestly don't know how i'm going to do it.

I mean, I understand that if they tell everyone when specific dr's are working the walk-in that they might get a rush of people on those days, but don't you think they could make exceptions for people who are affiliated with Counseling Services?

Its just very frustrating, and doesn't seem very sensitive The Dr's...

I don't know how i'm going to get through with this anxiety consuming me everywhere I go The Dr's...

(((((jacq10))))) I’m so sorry, I have your issue with dr’s but that policy has been in place for a long time. It’s very frustrating for a variety of reasons. My hometown is located about 15 miles from a great hospital and 12 from an awful hospital. Depending upon where you live in town, the good one might be closer, The majority of town’s people choose the good one, even though it’s in another state.

For many years, when the ambulance was called, you could say that you wanted to go to x or y. The crappy hospital has a new administrator, a lawyer, and there is a law on the books stating that you have to go to the nearest in state hospital to be stabilized. You no longer have a choice! The ambulance is legally obligated to bring you to the crappy hospital.

The crappy hospital gave my father pain killers and muscle relaxants and sent him home during a massive heart attack. The list of horror stories could be pages long. I worked as a CENA in a long term care facility and saw so many awful things when our residents went to the crappy hospital!

I think it’s so that good drs aren’t flooded and the bad ones don’t have any patients. When my grandmother needed er surgery, the hospital wouldn’t even tell us if there was a surgeon on duty or if he was only on call. Drove her to the good hospital!

(((((((AAAAA))))))

Thank you for your response, and i'm sorry to hear how things haven't worked out for you either in that respect - especially about your father, that must have been awful The Dr's...

And I do understand that they wouldn't want the "good" dr's flooded ... i just believe that given certain circumstances, there are exceptions to every rule! Oh well, I guess some things are just out of our hands!

tc,
Jacq

jacq - you don't have your dr's number? can't you call and ask to have her voicemail? You've got to be your own advocate!!! Don't give up! Keep working to find a way through!

ummm nope, no number. I'm not sure its quite like your thinking though ... she works at the University Health Services, with a bunch of other dr's and even more clients. And, I've only seen her a handful of times... The Dr's...

I would call to get an appointment with her and just sort of fumble my way through "this week's" days of the week; do an "I have time Tuesday does she have any openings then? No? Well is she on walk-in then, she was last time?" :-)

They have to have a phone number, where would you call if you had a question after an appointment? Can you call and tell them you have a question about your appointment you had with Dr. X? I'd keep calling until they got tired of me and gave me what I wanted.

They said she's completely booked up, and they won't tell you when she's on walk-in The Dr's...

I had an anxiety attack at WORK today! It was absoluetly horrible. I had to ask my manager if i could step outside for a second, right in the middle of my shift. That then just drew attention to myself, and the rest of my shift I had people bugging me if i was ok. NOO i'm not ok. The Dr's...

You don't have any other doctors anywhere? You could see another doctor you trust and have them call that doctor and talk about what she had in mind.

Well, there are other dr's at the University... and I could fully go to the walk-in and speak with someone ... but my problem is, I need to speak with her. This is because she knows a lot of my history, and also because of the anxiety issues with new dr's.

This would be so much easier if I had her extension or email.... maybe i will ask her at my next appt.

but if things con't to go how they are, i might just have to see if i can brave the walk-in.

I agree with Perna - keep calling until they give in. I wonder if you told them that Your dr is _______ and you are in an emergency and need her to call you....
can you try that?

They would probably just tell me that I should come in and see whoever is on walk-in that day.

Besides, I wouldn't say I'd classify as an "emergency"... I'd feel bad for taking up her time, time that would have been with another client who is no less important than I am.

ugh The Dr's...

(((((jacq10))))) I am so sorry that you're still going through this! I know exactly how you feel. My husband was in the Military for the first 7 years we were married and you got who you got and you liked it!

I think that you're best bet would be to ask her next time you see her for her pager number or some way to contact her.

As for her knowing your history, with a set up like the one through the University, most of your information SHOULD be in your file. The way it's set up, any doctor should be able to see you and catch up to in moments. You and I both know that this system is not in the patients best interest.

I hope that you're able to sort this out soon and perhaps find another dr there that you feel comfortable with.

I'd say if it's a choice between waiting until March to get a prescription, and braving a new Dr., I'd go for the new Dr., could you take a friend with you so at least you'd have someone to talk to while you're waiting?

good luck.
