Hey there good people. Just thought I'd send my second post to the ADD category as I believe this has been my main root issue since I was a little boy. Not the symptoms of depression, anxiety, social issues, addictions of every kind. Along with learning disability's which mean reading books is something that I have never enjoyed because I never comprehended when I was younger. As an adult I only read stuff of high interest. I would like to hear from other ADD adults, men and women on how they are doing, what they have done to make things better and just how having ADD has effected your life. Thanks.

I need the same kind of advice. I've been in a rut for about ten years, and it's only getting deeper.

Distracted, I shared on the other thread something that should help me, but maybe you two as well. The One Page Miracle:
http://www.danielplan.com/healthyhabits/loveyourself/ The format will download after you locate the link. I recently learn about this while listening to his audiobook from the book, Change your brain, change your life. Now I checked out the book from the library. I need to SEE the words for better comprehension. Sent from my GT-P3113 using Tapatalk 4 Beta |

Follow your heart no matter what. Now use your talents in serving others and live by the Golden rule. Now. Go to places you always wanted to go. Now. Start to retrain your minds with simple letters on your first wall you look at I'n the mourning. Words like I am a gifted person. I can here 2 different conversations at same time. I can really read between the lines better than most, I can vividly show you a seen from a movie with just my words. I can show love to my loved ones I can listen to my spouse with eye contact. I can give my spouce a chance to finish her conversations or at least her sentences. I can enjoy the gifts of my children and remember that time flies literally and before you know it our kids our groan, now give your selves more time cut yourselfs more slack dont get stuck on auto pilot life styles. Become love. Not the emotion love the word it'self love become that and accomplish the world

I am not trying to hijack the thread. But since reading and such has been mentioned. Do you any of you have a hard time reading a book or text book and absorbing the information from, but say your sitting in class you have no issues when your asked to read a section out of a book or off an overhead projector.
One of the things I have noticed about myself is I am not a bad reader because when I am asked to read something to a class or to a group of people I am fine with it. I read with no stops or stutters. But if I was asked to tell someone what I just talked about or what was contained in the reading I just Read. I do not not absorb what I read. I just see what is on the paper read and everything is fine as far as that goes. But actually absorbing what I read is a whole different can of worms. It is like my brain charges a toll for absorbing the information and storing it away for later use. Most of the time the toll is to much so it does not get payed and I forget what I was reading. Anyone else experience this? |

No problem here's what works for me I just read what interest me. Always do what interest you. Study what you want to study. If your heart is interested in what your doing your body and mind will be also. Live every day like its your last that way you live for today More often. Remember no matter what we have to realize in that hire up (our creator). And when all else fails stick to traditions. Franko

I have never been tested for a LD. But I mean how would I go about it now. I am out of high school I have never taken any college because it would be a nightmare for me. I mean how would I say it to a mental health professional. I think I may have an LD lol. Then they would probably laugh at me. But i am not one to beat around the bush or hint. I just tell what I feel and you take it however you will. So I dunno what I would do even if I wanted to find out. But also it took me basically all my life to finally find a person who woould listen to me and finally diagnosed me with ADD. I am 28 now. I am not ready to battle for another 20 years to find another piece of the puzzle. i would be dead by the time I found all my puzzle pieces ![]() |

Also to. It is not a matter of whether the material is interesting or not. It could be something I know I am interested in, but I just for the life of me cannot absorb what I am reading or hearing and just get frustrated.

It is hard having ADD, i have it, along with alot of other things.I am happy for you if you found out something about yourself you can work on. Now that you know what it is you can get the tools you need.A doc and T too? You need to keep doing what interests you, that should help. I know I never understood Math i can't grasp it either.

I must admit that I'm generally the same. I love to stick with the same author of my favorite books. I read a lot of Dean Koonz as one of his books was the first book I was ever really drawn to. Plus, I stopped taking any ADD medications in my teens. Yet, I'm questioning if I need to visit a doctor and go back on them.
My flights of fancy in what I like chance a lot. Might even be alittle scared of what my future holds. |

Anything by Jon Kabat-Zinn is really good too! Full Catastrophe Living is all about trying to live in the moment by simply becoming more aware of everything around you. I think the books on mindfulness-based therapy are also pretty useful. The Mindful Way Through Depression has been really helpful for me (although I still haven't gotten to read all of it).

How having ADD has affected my life:
1. Very low tolerance for frustration 2. I want what I want and I want it NOW! 3. Very difficult to stay on task when I find something boring despite knowing potential consequences. 4. I can not tolerate being in large stores or shopping centers for longer than an hour. It's just too much stimulation going on and when I reach my limits my thoughts echo the behavior of a two year old having a tantrum. 5. Can't figure out why I have such difficulty getting started on tasks that I do want to do. |
