i resent the fact that he used such extreme cases. i fear that there will be people who will not go in for a DX after seeing his show. they will be fearful of what might lie ahead for them. that's my story and i'm sticking to it.

for fear of sounding too judgemental, but I have been a member of these forums for a couple of years now, and did he really use EXTREME cases?
I read people's posts, and I'm not convinced that he used such "extreme" cases...
However, I will concede that he only revealed (either for time or ratings, or to get right to the issue) the peices of their dx that caused alarm...but then again, it's a tv show, not a Doctor's office.
I understand the concern the show caused, and I think that's what you've expressed.
I do believe people should be more aware that so many in our society have a "mental illness"...perhaps we should figure out why that is...

There was some talk about him not being a therapist but more of a life coach. I agree with that and at the end of the show if you can read really really fast it says that the advice given was specifically for the guests and not to change anything without talking to your own doctor.

Gotta be something about their "cases" that they are willing to broadcast it all over the planet, you know?

Also, I think that the legal issues are unbelieveable for "shows" like that. IMO the doctors that engage in such activity really push the limits of the "code." But then, if they announce that they (the doctors) subscribe to a certain type of therapy modality, then I guess they are legally off the hook? (Yeah, and Dr Laura too...she's also very opinionate and direct in her approach.)

I dunno who posted this and I know this is an old thread, but thought I'd say that I don't like Dr. Phil as a rule, #1. And #2, from reading this board, I get the sense that hearing voices and seeing things that aren't there are somewhat rare in bipolar. I experience them, but I am bipolar I. It also took many years to be diagnosed correctly for me. I was always told I was depressed, even though right along I had hallucinations and other symptoms! Probably, Dr. Phil just wanted to use extreme cases as examples to make a "good show".

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
