I finally started running again! It's something that has terrified me to start again, but today I decided to be positive and give it a go. I have an irrational fear about it because last time I ran, a year ago, I was put on Wellbutrin to quit smoking and it threw me into a manic episode. Needless to say, my mileage went from 6 miles quickly to 16!! No lie! I would go out for three hour runs! Well, I ended up taking myself off the Wellbutrin and my mileage started returning to the original six. I literally tore my body up trying to maintain the mileage. I quickly stopped running out of hurt and frustration. This was the precurser to being diagnosed cuz after my episode I was thrown into the worst depression of my life. That's when I started cutting again.

But on the positive note... I just made it half a mile at a 10 minute mile pace and another half at a 12 minute mile pace without killing myself. I am absolutely amazed by this cuz I have turned into a chain smoker that coughs all the time. I didn't realize that I had ANY fitness left and I didn't even huff and puff to badly. My body fell right back into proper running form. I weigh around 185 now, but at my peak I weighed 155! Ha!

Anyways... Do you think by elevating my endorphins I am asking for trouble with hypomania? Pdoc says to exercise, but I feel really good and last time I felt this way I went totally hypo! Should I be chasing a runners high? Am I just over reacting?

I haven't heard of exercise induced mania, pdocs encourage exercise to release those very endorphins, which gives us a much needed natural boost during depressive cycles. That being said, I can't say its never happened. What I DO say is; enjoy it, and be proud that you got back in the saddle. I'm proud of you

Hi Landskaperdan,

Your email made me laugh, because I have had a similar experience. Last summer I was on Wellbutrin and also had quite a hypomanic episode because of it. I could run forever, in fact, I felt that I needed to to get rid of the tremendous anxiety I was feeling.
I just started running again last week. I was dreading it, anticipating that it would be so hard. However, I managed 3 km, although I didn't monitor my speed. Baby steps!
So kudos for running again and we will have to support each other in this!
I don't think it can induce hypomania, never heard of it. I am using it to try and get out of a low right now.

Good for you Dan! This is awesome news! I don't think you should worry about hypo - you're on mood stabilizers that will keep it at bay. And if seems to get bad you can call the pdoc and ask about it. Wellbutrin made me hypersexual, I should've just ran!! haha But I like my wellbutrin and still take it just at a tiny dosage.

Good job on getting in the exercise. I've never heard of exercise being able to make someone hypo, though it certainly has helped me when I have been in a depressed state. I guess anything is possible. I certainly understand why it concerns you since you had that experience when you were on Wellbutrin. I would think about keeping a log of what you're doing and review it with your T or P-doc. Sometimes having our moods and activity written out gives us (or them) a clearer picture of whether things are getting out of hand or not. ++

I envy you. I am too heavy (186) for running plus I have urinary stress incontinence that is triggered by pounding on the floor. So I have to just walk. My goal is to have the pace of 15 mins per mile, but usually I am more like 16-17 mins per mile these days. If I manage to lose weight, and I doubt that I will, the stress incontinence would improve and I might be fit enough for running.

Enjoy!

Ummm... hamster..... We weigh the same! Just go slow, run at 3.5 to 4 mph on the treadmill. The treadmill absorbs impact like crazy and it keeps you by a bathroom. But no, your not too heavy at all!

Really! I will try. I can do 3.5-4mph. I will let you know how it goes. I just want to add that you are probably a taller male so your weight, for you, is more appropriate than it is for me.
