I'm currently on Lithium 450mg, Lamictal 300mg and Risidone 1.5mg. I have been looking to add additional supplements to my diet, I'm currently taking Fish Oil. Has anyone ever tried additional supplements with any success or should I stick with the cocktail I'm currently taking...don't want anything to interact with anything else

Hi Angrymanic. I'm currently taking a B+ supplement.
I feel more energy throughout the day. I used to drink energy drinks, but I stopped that. I also take vitamin D. It helps with memory, which I have trouble with.Good luck.

hi Angrymanic, am in the same camp w Piraeus on the supplement issue. Doc himself recomended some, my gp. However, recently cut finger and had infection, stitches, and colonoscopy and had to stop anything that thinned your blood. So even though most of our docs getting on the electric records, etc., along with pharmacy, do your homework, and research all of it, supplements included!

I recommend you consider purchasing a paperback called "What You Must KNow About
Vitamins, Minerals, Herbs & More" by Dr. Pamela Wartian Smith, M.D., MPH.

It contains data on all the vitamins, giving you a section adjacent to the description
which explains the illnesses that vitamin may help target. For example, niacin is
helpful in brain function, so is Folate, in fact, the whole B series is beneficial for
brain functioning and calmness.

But if one is contraindicated for any illness or interacts in a negative way with your
medication, you are told that, also.

I refer to it often when I'm trying to answer a question for myself or someone else.

Thanks, the homeopathic doctor I saw suggested a vitamin D deficiency and low levels of GABA may also be contributing to the mood disorder. Like I said I'm taking a handful of meds morning and night and am fearful of adding anything that may be harmful. My PDoc gave me the OK to take Chantix and needless to say I'm still smoking like a chimney...so I'm not sure she is 100% positive on interactions.

I recently saw an alternative medicine Psychiatrist for a consult.
He is trained in eastern and western medicine, but is a MD.

He told me to slowly cut out Gluten, sugar, and dairy from my diet. He gave me the following supplements, vitamin D, COQ10,
Fish oil much higher dose than I was taking, A multi for my age I am a 57 yr old woman, a supplement for menopause, A spray for under my tongue when I felt anxious. He recommended acupuncture 2 times a week. He also stressed exercise every day even if it is just a short walk.

On my own I take a supplement NAC.

I posted somewhere else that I thought my B-12 supplement was helping with my depression. I should be taking B-6 as well. A nutritionist told me that almost every adult is vitamin D deficient. He recommended a supplement of 1000 IU of vitamin D. The only reason to take fish oil is for the omega-3 fatty acids. Fish oil and fish oil capsules are a con job. The oil in the capsules is almost always rancid and the EPA and DHA have been obliterated by oxidization. Hemp, flax, and chia seeds as well as walnuts are much better sources of omega 3s. The nutritionist recommended staying away from isolated vitamin A. He said humans don't need that much and the isolated form probably does more harm than good.

Hope this helps.
Thanks for this!

Thanks. I would like to take some that helps with anxiety and stress, not much of a problem with depression anymore since I've been on Lamictal. My primary concern is the anxiety and stress that brings upon my mania. The herbalist mentioned GABA but not sure how it will react with my other meds, lithium, rispidal and Lamictal.

You might want to give acupuncture a try.

Omega 3 fatty acids--a quality brand--is excellent for you. Be sure to take vitamin E
to prevent oxidation, and you should benefit really nicely from their use. There are
good brands out there, and I like Nordic Omega 3 fatty acids because they have such
a rigid standard, and the flavor is pleasant.

The whole vitamin B series is good for brain condition (calming the nerves, etc.).

I'd ask my psychiatrist about GABA use. It seems to be that I read recently that
it can have negative effects on mental illness. Can't remember offhand the source,
but it did make an impression on me.

Just read this on the Internet. I hope the attachment shows.

I never heard of a lot of this stuff.

I am looking to get off most of my Psyc meds because of side effects, so I have been researching homeopathic choices.

I currently take Vitamin D 1000icus, magnesium 50mgs. I heard from others that you can buy something called CALM in health food stores. Its magnesium citrate that absorbs quickly and calms anxiety.

I used to take hemp seed oil for Omega 3s and 6 but personally didnt notice a difference.

Sometimes in the morning if im not feeling the energy or feel dull I drink a sports drink powder mix. It has all the B vitamins and amino acids, its meant for working out. Kind of expensive thou, I only got it cause it was 50% off hehe
