Is anyone else here hypersensitive to noise? I was diag. with bipolar, mostlly manias, and seizures. I regularly take my meds (Depakote, Seroquel) but some days, noise makes me feel like I'm going totally off the wall.
Neighbors (we live in a suburb) are cutting down a Huge old tree. It is taller than any of the houses. They have been working on this, with a chainsaw for over 2 months, the husband & wife. They saw & saw from 4:00 until about 8 pm on weekdays and all day Sat/Sunday. I can't hear my TV or music. Other neighbors have asked them "how long is this going to go on?" They just laugh & say "who knows?" Our city has noises ordinances but only if the noise goes on after 10 pm. I have not been able to do grocery shopping due to the loud noises (kids screaming, grocery cart wheels so loud) & am glad that my husband does this. But to have to be tortured in my own home is awful. I had to quit working due to seizures in 2007 (my neurologist insisted I quit work & quit driving). So we do not have the money for me to go out more than once a week for coffee with friends. So that's not an option. It's 2 miles to the library. I love the library but some days that is just such a long way to walk. Any ideas?

Wow, I don't consider myself that sensitive to noise, but that would drive me batty, too. I wonder if anyone else has a chainsaw and could go to help. At least the job would get done sooner!

Is it a matter of noise or does the noise trigger anxiety in you?

I too am extremely sensitive to noise, especially noise that is repetitive. I can easily be overstimulated by the TV being too loud as well. But if it's noise I can control, like my iPod or the radio in my car, I do OK.

This is my view on my situation, which might help you out so you know that you are not alone. I suffer from Bipolar I with mixed episodes and OCD. I believe that when I go into a manic state some of the OCD comes out which makes me sensitive to sounds. I can't stand certain peoples voices, and other noises. When this happens I feel it building in my chest and I just want to scream at the top of my lungs because I am so irritated. I believe the chainsaw would drive anyone to madness. Do you have issues with other certain sounds?

I'm sensitive, but at random times. Sometimes the sound of someone chewing hurts my head.

I COMPLETELY relate to how you are feeling! It's awful. I wear foam earplugs a lot of the time. That helps a bit. Sending you a friend request. PM me if you ever want to chat. x

I understand this is an actual medical condition. Other PB's have written about it in other posts. I'm blanking on the name, though. Sorry.

For me the worst is the bing bing on cars. After five or six bings I have to get out of the car and walk away to where I can't hear it anymore.

The sound of basketballs on concrete activates my rage trigger.

Screaming children in the store. If I pass them I say duct tape!High pitched, repetative sounds are the worst, but I've read that a lot of people can't stand to hear other people eating.
Thanks for this!

I have what is sometimes severe sensory overstimulation problems when even the slightest thing can set me off.

My T recommended I invest in noise canceling headphones, and I've had a pair now for about 6 months or so, and they have been an absolute lifesaver!! I can put them on and just have the white noise, or I can listen to music, depending on what I need. Mine are Audio Technia brand and only cost $100 (super cheap for noise canceling headphones) and they work super well. I bring them with me pretty much everywhere because you never know when you might need them. Maybe give that a try?

Normally, I am not, but I was when on Seroquel. Since you take it, I thought I'd mention. I also had AH (auditory hallucinations) on Seroquel and only on Seroquel.

PS in other words, the question is whether you had hypersensitivity before starting on the drugs.

Yes, very sensitive to noise. There is so much of it everywhere
It is strange though, the sound of sirens does not bother me, but
the sound of tv bothers me so much

Smells too.Sometimes I will smell somebody's perfume and I almost throw-up

Our now 14 y/o DD, who was diagnosed about 2 months ago, was very sensitive to noise from the time she was an infant! The first time she ever cried before going to school (she loved school) she was in Kindergarten. We later found out the teacher explained that there would be a loud fire drill tomorrow right before they practiced for it. She was terrified!

I can't stand the sound of people coughing/clearing their throats/sniffling or rustling around with papers and things. Tv or radio too sometimes, esp. if it's competing with other sounds. this sounds bad, but sometimes listening to my mother really bothers me - not because her voice is hard to listen to, but because I always feel like she's talking really slowly and it makes me incredibly impatient (I already know what you're going to say 5 minutes from now so hurry it up!!!)

I can't imagine having to listen to a chainsaw while stuck in my house - that would drive me totally crazy!!! If you have headphones I might suggest listening to white noise/ambient sounds instead of music...
Also, can you just go to the coffee shop without purchasing anything? I know this is technically 'frowned upon' but who cares?! (I doubt the people that work there do / or even notice)...as long as you're not taking up the last empty seat, what difference does it make? You could even explain the chainsaw situation and I'm sure someone would be empathetic...

I am super-sensitive to noise when I am off medication and experiencing a mixed episode. It is awful. If I take the seroquel and depakote I rarely experience this, so these meds do help me. People's voices, the tv, and construction work outside my house drive me crazy and the only thing I can do is get in my car and drive. The sound of the car is soothing...the sound of the car tires blocks out the noise. It has been my salvation. Now, I am having normal mood with minor spurts of hypo mania. It is nice...and I can watch tv again!

Noises are a major trigger for me. My kids particularly. It's very difficult and I'm working on coping mechanisms to deal with it. I have a list to run through. Sometimes they do nothing, sometimes they help a lot - there are so many factors in it all it just depends.

Do you have any coping techniques you can turn to? Breathing, meditation, yoga, exercise (for some people), aromatherapy, baths, journaling, etc. Things to turn your focus and attention to, to help you reduce the effect of the noise?

Also I'd consider writing a letter (anonymous if you are passive like me) detailing the effect their chain sawing is having on you. Maybe if they realize the personal effect it's having on their neighbors, they will be more considerate. If you live in a subdivision could you write to the HOA or whoever "oversees" the neighborhood?

Thank you Black Sheep. Yes, other sounds also bother me. I can't stay long in grocery stores because crying babies, the noise of shopping carts, etc. bother me a lot. When I'm walking downtown, the sound of loud car engines is upsetting.

I believe the chainsaw would drive anyone to madness. Do you have issues with other certain sounds?[/quote]

thank you for your friend request, Rainy Day! Ear plugs do help but don't completely block out noise (like the chainsaw) but does help. Hugs!

I am super sensitive to noise. For me, this does not seem to be med related.
I am under siege by the roar of real commercial lawn mowers and all the accompanying noisymakers like power blowers, power washers, chain saws, weed whackers ...
to the point that I begin to wonder if my tinnitus has changed now, to the sound of outdoor power mowers? Oh my. If so, even the best noise canceling headphones can't help.
Thanks for this!

Yup, same here. For me it seems to happen at random intervals. Having tinitis doesn't help much either.
I'm a big couch -potato and sometimes the television is just too loud. The neighborhood bird population gets to me sometimes ( explain that one lol. ) Working retail I also have to deal with shrieking demon-children. And then there is the brain-chatter. Oy vey !
Thanks for this!

A loud tv gets to me too! My husband will wear headphones at night to watch tv when it's too much for me.
