When you can't sleep, what do you choose to do with yourself? Do you read a book? Watch TV for hours on end? Fitfully toss & turn? Etc... Just wondering what others do with the newfound unintentional time...

I try to clear my mind of all the clutter. I imagine a white sheet in front of me. If I start to see things, I close my eyes harder, and think about the white sheet in front of me. If my mind is really racing bad, I just get up and have some tea, and read a little. Then I try to go back to bed, and start over with the white sheet.

For me, it could take up to an hour to finally fall asleep. I also sleep walk. Sometimes I do some really strange things. I will fall asleep standing straight up. I drank body soap. Last week, I sprayed foot powder pray in my mouth. It tasted horrible......lol.

Sincerely,

Piraeus

I do different things all the time. If my mind is racing too fast to read or pay attention to tv. I try to lay down and relax every part of my body. Sometimes I have to start at the top and relax myself by consiously making each part relax. Sometimes I count sheep litterally. I close my eyes and picture them jumping over me and believe it or not sometimes it works. I think it takes my mind off of the racing thoughts and I can fall asleep. My old therapist taught me to do that. Sounds funny but works. If nothing works I just get up after a few hours and start my new day.

I usually try to empty my mind by finding one thing and focusing on it. If that doesn't work I will get up an watch TV or play on the computer, and then a little later try to lay down sleep again. At that point I just take whatever sleep I get and then start my day off when I get up.

I usually try to write a little bit, because that's when my most productive and creative writing tends to happen. Then I take two melatonin pills and turn on some Ella Fitzgerald. It's been the only "cocktail" I've found that puts me to sleep!

I also count sheep and watch them jump over a fence in the meadow..if that doesn't work I'll watch tv. Like last night I was watching my fav movie titanic...it was on tv and I hate all the commercials so I tried to lay down. After half an hour I got back up, had a cig then went back to the movie. I finally went to sleep after taking a xanex...helps me relax enough to drift off to sleep.

I take meds for it. When I really can't sleep at all, I usually toss and turn, or listen to calming music

So far, I haven't found a med that helps me sleep except seroquel but my pdoc doesn't want me taking it anymore... But I started this thread to see what others do out of curiosity. My answer, if anybody wants to know: blog, come here, watch TV, try to self medicate (rarely works), text my boyfriend who never seems to sleep (also bipolar), read textbooks, and get mad at myself while tossing and turning.

I toss and turn, or I get up and read a book. I remember one night I couldn't sleep and I started punching the wall because I was so frustrated. Not being able to sleep is torture for me. Thankfully that doesn't happen too often.

I take ballet lessons regularly, I have a bar in my house, so I dance..It gets out whatever I'm feeling even if it's just energy, jitters, anxiety, etc. and I just like dancing, it's fun, and TV just keeps me up. I clean sometimes too. =/ And read. Reading usually works for me so that's my go to at first

Oh yeah, now I'm on a small dose of seroquel, 25 mgs..it works, but sometimes I wake up extremely early. I just get up so I can get tired the next day. I need my sleep or I start getting a little crazy
