First up I'm not suicidal. I just have no passion for the things I used to enjoy. I'm underemployed in a dead end call center job but can find a job in my field of social work. I look at the listings any apply for 2-3 a week but some I just don't have the energy or patience for.
Laying in bed with my dog and a stack of library books is about all the passion I can muster right now. I'm on 450 mg effexor daily plus 2 mg klonopin to help with anxiety and sleep. I'm seeing a therapist weekly and she suggested I go to a support group but they're all in the evenings when I'm at work so I'm giving this a try. I'm diagnosed with major depression with bouts of cyclothymia. The depression seems strongest usually. Thanks for listening. Cat |

Dear cat2992, welcome to PC.
there are many forums that might be on interest http://forums.psychcentral.com I admire you for putting up with a call center job. I do outbound calling and find that many times I can sense things in people's voices. I get more sensitive to hearing people's state of mind in their voice. This job could be a training ground that could make you more sensitive to other people. Since you lost your passion for things, do you think it is due to your meds, your job, or something else. If you are wiped out on the medicine you could talk to your psychiatrist about adjusting or changing meds. WHat are you interested in the library books? That sounds like some definite interest. I know creativity usually gets buried till the weekend when I can sleep enough to recover and get out of the grind. |

Like you, I don't have much passion for life when I am very depressed. Fortunately, there are tools such as therapists, meds, support groups such as this, and trying to be more active that help bring hope and a joy in living. Even getting out of doors for walks helps me, one step at a time. Trying the various tools or re-trying activities that once were enjoyed may help bring back hope and then a taste of joy that can be a start.

Thanks for the replies. I'm a crime novel lover. I have made a goal to apply for at least two jobs a week and have done well so far. I have a masters degree in human services but I seem to be either over qualified or missing some other essential experience. It's quite disheartening.
I attend therapy weekly right now. I would like to do a weekly group too but I work those nights. ![]() I was on abilify but that Made me eat like a linebacker and pack on the pounds. Depressing needless to say. Right now reading is my life line. I also enjoy walks with my husband and our 100 lb lab. Trips to the dog park are good too. Interacting with other dog moms is good. |

That's awesome that you are trying, Cat! Usually with a resume- you really want to emphasize your accomplishments & how they related to your new job vs a rehash of what you do everyday. Let me know if you need any help.
You may want to consider building some relationships with local non-profits in your area so you can make some contacts with social services professionals in your field of interest. Make a point to research the non-profits- if one doesn't list an internship program- then consider approaching the volunteer manager about creating an internship opportunity and provide some concrete suggestions on what you can do. Even if the internship is unpaid and you're only able to commit 5 hours a week to it- it'll help your resume stand out. It sounds like you're doing a lot of right things- and your effort will pay off if you keep trying.

Thanks! I contacted a local non profit and I'm on the list to get in there once the new vol coord is on board. I figured it would be something to do with my time. Plus give me opportunities to find what I'm passionate about.
