I thought I had depression, but I'm not always depressed. My mood changes so much.

My boyfriend calls me bipolar since I'm really happy or I'm really sad or mad. When I'm mad, I usually break things. I've broken so many cell phones since they're always with me and my parents get mad over it since i'm wasting money and they don't want to deal with it, which only makes me more mad.

I have mood swings all the time and I can never controll them. Sometimes even I cry for like 5 minutes and get really hard on myself about things then I'll laugh and then I'll be fine.

Any suggestions?

Honey, you really need to see a psychiatrist and see about being diagnosed. A lot of what you describe are symptoms of bi-polar But a dr. is the only one qualified to answer that question for you. It takes time to be properly diagnosed with bp. Usually you have to keep track of mood swings, how often, to what degree, what may trigger these moods, etc...
If you are diagnosed as having bp, then that is a big part of the problem solved because then you can begin doing something about it. Bp is very treatable with medication, but that takes time too. Finding the meds that are right for and at the correct dosage. Most of us have been there though and can help you through that process too.
You'll have to talk to your parents about getting to a dr. If they've experienced your mood swings they should agree and want to get you some help. Please do this as soon as possible because the sooner the better. Bp can cause a lot of pain and destruction in your life and in others lives. If there's any chance of avoiding that...take it!!!
I'll keep an eye out for you and I'll be here for you through the good times and the bad.

That sounds a lot like me before I started going to therapy and went on medication. Up, down, horrible highs and lows. It's getting better now a bit at a time. Most definitely get checked out by a psychiatrist, life is too short to live like that. I still don't know if it's bipolar II (they said it might be) but I know things are beginning to level off and that's nice.

PS I used to throw all kinds of stuff, too.

Yes, get checked out. My husband said I was either on or off. I had such extreme mood swings. I was misdiagnosed with unipolar depression for many years. Any bipolar in your family? It is very often genetecially based. Sorry about typos--new laptop &b keys feel funny!--Suzy

Here is alink for a mood tracker.
It is very helpful and easy to use...it also lets you do some journaling which can be helpful too.
You can also print out the graph to then give to your therapist if you want to...a very useful tool.
