I had an apt with my PCP today, and was supposed to have an apt with my T later this afternoon, but he had a death in the family and had to cancel. So my next appt. with him isn't until next Wed. But I talked w/ my PCP about changing my meds.... she didn't do a whole makeover like I had wanted, but she did add Seroquel to the mix. Can anyone that's taking that tell me about it? She said not to start it until I am going to be off of work the next day because it acts as a sort of sedative at first until I titrate up to a higher dose. What other side effect has anyone noticed? I had asked to do change to Lamictal, and Latuda but she said those are super expensive and without trying some others first the insurance companies usually will deny them. Stupid insurance companies.
![]() ![]() ![]() Hopefully I can get my T to refer me into the P-doc soon and get things to even out. I've got to do something. I can't keep going like this....it's exhausting, irritating, frustrating, annoying....I hate this.

I have been on Seroquel and yes, the first few nights can hit you like a train but after a while the sedative effect passes and it just keeps you chilled. Apart from the tiredness there were few other side-effects (one can be restless legs)so it is worth giving it a go. It helped a bit with agitation and restlessness but in the end I found Olanzapine to be a better fit for me. Still, if i am having trouble sleeping I use 25mg of Seroquel and sleep like a baby as I don't use it every night.

Generic lamictal isn't unreasonably priced. Latuda is high dollar which is why I'm on seroquel, the XR version of seroquel is also expensive. I slept like a zombie the first few days and ive gained weight. It has helped depression a lot but I hate the weight gain.

Your doc is right about Latuda being expensive (no generic). However, there is a generic for Lamictal. It was the first medication I was ever on and had no issues insurance wise. Do wait to start Seroquel until you have a day off. I remember it making me tired at first. Seroquel can cause weight gain, so watch what you eat if that is an issue. I stopped taking it because of the weight gain, but it did help.

This is night #2 of the Seroquel. 2nd 50mg dose. Tomorrow I go up to 100mg. Pretty disappointed in the sedation qualities it has. PCP made it sound like I was going to be blowing saliva bubbles then unconscious for 12+hrs after taking it. Not so. I woke up quite a few times last night. Didn't feel like I slept any better than normal. I actually took a good long nap about 5 hrs after taking it. (not unusual for the weekend). So far not feeling any different really. As far as my mood goes today... pretty crappy actually. Very short and snappy w/ people. Nice and sweet to others... So far the rx gets a 1 out of 5 star rating.

50mg isnt that high of a dose but it should be sedating if you have just started it. What dose does she want you on eventually? Is it for sedative or for mood stabilisation?
I was on it for a couple years 900mg XR before I got sick of the weight gain, restless legs and other side effects but it was good for me and worth the side effects for about 2 years. Really I think I went off it as I was swinging up - I dropped it so fast and spent 6 months in hypomania. I've been on and off it prn for years, the lower doses are sedating. I dont take it now as I prefer zyprexa too for prn. |

I take 200mg and enjoy the sedative effect. I go to bed early and sleep about 12 hours. I'm not working and find time weighs heavily on my hands so i appreciate the shorter day.

There is a big difference between straight Seroquel and Seroquel XR.
Who has been managing your psych meds? Your PCP or did you have a Pdoc originally for the other meds? Adderall? Vyvanse? PCP's just do not know enough about psych meds and there interactions to be prescribing IMHO. Straight Seroquel in low dose works as a mood stabilizer a higher dose is usually more sedating as previously mentioned. I hope you find something that works soon ![]()

It was sedating the first couple days then went straight back to insomnia the first time I used it. It stopped the racing thoughts and made me so chill that near car accidents wouldn't get a reaction out of me. My legs got sore too at night.
This last experience it stopped negative thoughts but sedated me so much so that I was having 20 min naps every hour or two. I've heard of it not sedating people before so you're not alone in that. It's just doesn't have the same effect.

She said with the Seroquel, its different than you'd think. That the lower doses have the higher sedation, and the higher you go, the lower the sedating it is. I don't know, I just know so far I don't like it, and after last night - eating everything insight, it lost the one star I gave it before. It's now got a big fat 0 out of 5 stars.

Yes the Seroquel munchies are like nothing I have experienced before. I would be up at 1am eating straight sugar with a spoon the cravings were that intense. I can always tell when the inpatients have had their seroquel cos all the biscuits go missing haha.
I found it wasnt as bad on the XR, but I still gained weight as it messed with my metabolism a bit. The XR also wasnt as sedating but sounds like you want some sedation too. Green tea helped with my food cravings and just not keeping processed or sugary food in the house stopped the nighttime binge. |

Well, this is my personal point of view on Seroquel.
I don't mean for it to be an offensive point of view. I really hope that it does not come across this way. I only remain on a dosage of Seroquel that will keep me within a healthy BMI range. The reality is too high a dose, for me personally, it does make me put on weight, but I suspect that this has to do with some of past history but generally I must say this truthfully is a common side effect. It does cause weight gain. So for me it was a fine balance of finding out what "dosage" wouldn't interfere with my weight gain yet be "high" enough to stabilise me, if that makes sense. Took a bit of playing around with. But we've figure it out. It can be a good one. Just depends on a few personal factors you may or may not wish to take into account. ![]() My Pdoc and I decided to give Invega a whirl. It works on my anger irritation bouts of psychosis and anxiety really well , No side effects , no increase in hungry, really not a single bad side effect... First week or two I felt kinda weird , Nothing horrible , just weird. But it resolved. I stayed on it 8-9 months. I have dropped my meds with Pdoc approval. I cycle on medication and off . So I feel no need to ingest chemicals daily if I'm still going to swing. I'm Hypo/Mania right now ,Im enjoying the hell out of it. ![]() I hate Big Pharma .. I mean as if all us people who struggle need a medication that makes you eat anything that doesn't move? Yeah I don't think that's going to be helpful. I do hope you can find a Pdoc as I think you will get a better treatment plan. Don't settle , find the best treatment plan for you ![]()
