What's the difference between seeing a councillor and seeing a psychologist?

Hi Trav1985

Great question that got me wondering because I didn't know this answer either.

I found this article here by Doc John where he explains the difference between a counselor and a psychologist:

I don't think worse, just neutral. There is nothing I talk about in there that I won't talk about with a friend. It seems pointless and I'm not sure what it is meant to accomplish.

Same. It was pretty useless for me. But it can't hurt to give it a shot, at least for a couple sessions, and see what you think.

I think for bipolar issues or folks who have poor coping skills, DBT can be really helpful though - or at least parts of it can.

Dialectical behavior therapy. It's supposed to be really good for issues like bipolar and BPD. It helps you learn how to handle strong emotions in healthy ways.

I've found it very helpful but it can be hard to find a good fit-my current T I have been seeing since Aug/Sept & we are building a good rapport-with the support I have been able to journal things I thought I would never let out of my head & actually have moved forward to being able to talk about some of them. It can get very intense at times though as things get stirred up-as with other treatments it works for some & not for others.

It does not help the depression, it helps the times in between episodes when I can make steps towards a more comfortable life.y

Idk, what is talk therapy?

Doesn't sound like something i would do, let alone pay for.

I have friends who listen for free.

Whatever therapy I have been going to has definitely been helping. I don't go there to spew my guts for an hour, I go there to find guidance, coping skills, insight, a game plan... Etc

I don't see the point in just aimlessly whining about how shyt my week has been.

I agree that DBT is about the only useful thing. I'm glad my therapist is focusing primarily on DBT. My last therapist wouldn't touch it and we got nowhere, I resented her a lot. She was really condescending and unhelpful.

I think it helps, I've been doing it weekly for over a year. We have had to go through triggers and try to correct my absurd avoidance behavior, so sometimes it's really tough and I feel like it's making things worse. But I realize that it's helping me face my fears and I am strengthened because of it. It also helps me "unload" on someone trustworthy, as opposed to my compulsive desire to tell someone about my problems or things I feel guilty about.
