I'm pretty sure the Wellbutrin is responsible for my weight loss...
Whether from depression or Wellbutrin (or Seroquel which I doubt), my appetite is is non-existent to the point where I'm thinking of buying a case of Ensure just to choke down enough calories in a day. I'm having a really hard time eating/drinking more than 800-1000 which is way too low for me as I am doing physical activity every day, and my shifts at the barn are basically a 2 1/2 hr long workout 3X/week. I like the fact that I've lost weight and that it's easy not to over-eat, but I'm also losing a lot of hair. I have very thick hair so I can lose some, but I'm not sure if it will stop. Last week my Wellbutrin was increased by 150 to 300mg, and my Seroquel was increased by 50mg to 150mg. Also added 3.25mg Zopiclone every night. ideas? |

This is just my experience with Seroquel, but it made me gain weight. Sometimes I'm so drowsy and about to fall asleep but I feel the need to go get a snack. I haven't had any changes in hair loss. It's actually improved on my cocktail since I'm less depressed.
Wellbutrin is known to cause weight loss and bupropion is one of the ingredients in Contrave, a weight-loss drug. Definitely get some Ensure to supplement your meals if your appetite is poor. I wish Wellbutrin didn't make me crazy ![]() |

They jury is still out on whether it's making me crazy as I may be in a mixed state. At the least, a very energy driven agitated depression with outbursts, and suicidal feelings.
But since the second WB was added, my mood has lifted a little but I still feel that horrible dead inside and a fog in my brain. Before the WB I ate like that on the Seroquel too. I often got out of bed and went to the fridge. Never felt full. But the hair loss! Will that stop? Or will I end up bald? I'm middle aged and look well enough for my age but my hair is important to me. I've got beautiful hair and I'd like to keep what assets I have as others fade at this time of life :-) So fat, hungry, gorgeous hair vs thinner but still overweight, anxious, bald. |

I just had a case of hair loss. It finally stopped. Annoying isn't? Drove me nuts. I am sorry the choices suck.

Valentina, did you stay on the meds and it eventually stopped falling out? That happened to me years ago on Valproic Acid. I was losing clumps at first (apparently a very rare side effect) but it stopped and I took it for years until it gave me pancreatitis (an even rarer side effect).
I don't even look up side effects when i start new meds anymore. I don't want to even know. I wait till they happen, then look them up. Almost always, on a very low dose, I get the rare side effects that only seem to happen to very few people. It's why I have so much trouble finding meds I can tolerate. Hair loss (as long as it will stop) may have to be an acceptable side effect because I have so few options. years ago on amitriptyline before bipolar diagnoses I got up to 75mg and my blood pressure was so low I was almost fainting several times a day. I'd start to black out every time I stood up. Valproic acid: hair loss then pancreatitis (and of course weight gain, but that's common) Effexor: pancreatitis. Absolute HELL coming off that stuff. Electric buzzing in my brain. (again weight gain but that's common.) Nicoderm: turned my arm purple, with painful throbbing as it seemed to cut off circulation, gave chest pains when applied anywhere on chest near heart Lithium: 600 mgs significant tremor. I also believe it has induced this more than 2 year depression. It stopped me cycling out of it, and I've stayed in depression since being put on it over 2 years ago. I've been off it for months now and still depressed. Morphine: makes agitated and feel rage Ativan: I've had some weird episodes on Ativan where I was out of my mind crazy. It was from taking a few mgs instead of the usual .5-1mg so was from abuse. But I was possibly psychotic. My husband had to control/restrain me. Wellbutrin? Or increased Seroquel? Both increased on same day...hair loss and possible tachychardia. I woke up out of a dead sleep the other night with severe chest pains and pounding heart palpitations racing and pounding. Trying to get dressed to go to emerg the pain was unbearable and I was blacking out. It stopped on the way to the hospital and every test they ran was normal. They told me that it was either anxiety or heartburn. Didn't feel like either and I"m not sure that I'd wake up with excruciating pain from anxiety... Licorice tea (too much) : Heart palpitations Melatonin: coudn't sleep, heart pounded, eyes fluttered open if I took a deep breathe. couldn't stay asleep at all and had the lightest sleep of my life other than when bringing newborns home for first nights... years ago (well over 20) when I smoked marijuana, I used to get exhausted and cold, my bones and joints would all ache and my hands and halfway up my arms, feet and halfway to my knees as well as my nose would be like ice. Other people couldn't believe how cold my arms and legs were. i would huddle under a blanket, aching and freezing, wishing I could come down or fall asleep. Alcohol is extremely dangerous and I can go completely crazy and violent on it. Or become impulsively suicidal. Very dangerous for me. many others I can't remember, but the point is that it's hard for me to find any meds that I can take. Some of those side effects were life threatening, others were just intolerable. |

The weight loss itself can be causing hair loss.
I was on seroquel years and didnt have a problem with hair loss. Moderate weight gain. I was on welburtin 2 weeks and it sent me agitated while not improving the depression. |

If you are too depressed and not getting good nutrition/sleep etc that can affect your hair. Mine has been coming out too b/c I'm living on cereal, hardboiled eggs, oatmeal and yogurt plus whatever my mom feeds me.
Centrum Silver sometimes helps with hair loss (it's helping me now). I think it is the selenium in it. Biotin can also help although I do not know where that information comes from so you might want to google it before believing it (I think my old stylist but I really am not sure).

I've lost about 70 pounds in the 18 months I've been on Wellbutrin. Like you it's been due to lack of appetite, but I don't know whether that was due to the med or the depression. Since I got over my most recent depression my appetite has been returning. I was way overweight so losing that 70 was a good thing-- and I can stand to lose 30 more. If I were not overweight and started losing weight on Wellbutrin I would be concerned. I've been experiencing some hair loss, but I'm a 59 year old male.

When I was on Depakote, I lost clumps of hair. Luckily, I have thick hair so it wasn't noticeable. It did level off about six months into the medicine.

Wellbutrin caused lack of appetite and i lost weight in the very beginning but stopped after about a year. Seroquel caused hair loss for me. I no longer take seroquel but due to weight gain and sleeping all the time. I could clog my shower drain in a week when i took seroquel. I dont have that much hair. Its fine and brittle thin from lithium. I am extremely sensitive to meds though. My experience is not the norm!

I gained weight on Wellbutrin and significantly more on Seroquel.
Right now I am taking Metformin (a diabetes drug) off label to stop the weight gain. I really haven't lost any but I HAVE kept it off since the prescription. |

I never found out what caused the hair loss. But it was everywhere for a while. I had to clean my hairbrush every other day.
I started Centrum Silver and biotin and nioxin hair treatment and Nioxin shampoo. I know hair loss just happens with age, but 2 different hair dressers noticed it and asked me about it. Anyway, after a few months it stopped. So I don't know what caused it or stopped it. |

I lost giant clumps of hair when I was put on Wellbutrin. Have a blood test done. My bloodwork came back low in iron, so I started takin an iron supplement and multi-vitamins for hair and nails; they contain biotin and lutiene. I also take an extra biotin supplement. Hair is back to normal now, no hair loss and I am still on the Wellbutrin.
You are very sensitive to meds as am I. The other day, I had a cup of coffee after dinner out and was up the entire night! I cannot smoke pot, alcohol is fine but one drink is all I need. I'm a cheap drunk for sure! ![]() |

When I was on 300mg of seroquel I gained ten pounds in six months, but I think it was more due to eating jars of jam and m&ms than anything!

i gained a small amount of weight on seroquel. the first round of wellbutrin did the same to me as to you, minus the hair loss. I was not on seroquel at that time, however. the wellbutrin did lower appetite quite a lot, it was not an issue to forget a meal or only have snacks after breakfast. weight fell off, but once i stopped it and had a horrid summer, I gained so much more. I started it again about 2 1/2 months ago, and some weight is gone. i guess it just really depends on other interactions with meds and what you're doing. the first time i was exercising more than I am now while again on it. i hope you can find some foods that taste good, to provoke appetite.
