Music helps keep me stable. Is that weird? Does anyone else feel this way?

When I'm depressed (like right now), I like to listen to "angry" music. I really HATE happy music when I'm like that. Happy music makes me feel like I should be happy, but then I'm like, "Well, I can't be happy, so f*** this s***."

Examples of "happy" music: love stories, upbeat songs. Those types of songs irritate the living s*** out of me when I'm in a sour mood. F*** that happy music. Most pop music these days is what I consider "happy music" -- e.g., Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, Ed Sheeran, etc..

Depressive music is okay, but I prefer songs that make me rage hard. Lets me get out my frustrations.

When I'm manic, I can tolerate almost anything, as long as it's not Justin Bieber or anything like that. (I can't tolerate Bieber in any mood! Sorry, Beliebers.) Sometimes angry music gets me pumped, but pretty much anything goes. Hell, I'll blast Country music and I don't even normally like Country music!

Otherwise, normal mood = rock, alternative.

I have three playlists for different mood states. I have a rainy days playlist full of depressing songs, obviously for depression. Sunny days playlist for hypomania - mostly fast rock. i also have a positive mind full of positive, uplifting songs for mild depression.

I have not baseline for five months so I have been listening to my stable music, mostly ska punk and rock.

Music is therapy for me too. I am a music snob so in all states I am very particular about what music I listen to.

However when I am mixed I am completely intolerant of music I don't like at the time (and this can vary from minute to minute). I can throw a fit to get the music changed or get away from it.

Like others when hypo I love energetic and uplifting music and when depressed I love sad music and cannot stand happy music. I am also less open to exploring new music when depressed.

Overall music is a core part of my life. I listen to it almost all the time and even play it on guitar. Without music I doubt I would survive. It can be such a comfort to me in all phases of my life.

I have like 4 variant of playlist of tons of genres; Euphoric, Lively, Mellow and Melancholic.
Euphoric being the Dance/EDM/Techno music, Lively being Guitarish and cheery(mostly country), Mellow being slow beat pop and soul. Melancholic is darker and songs that will make me cry. It really helps me during my mood shifts

Listening to and singing along with music is very helpful to me when I'm manic or paranoid. It gives my mind something to focus on and I really get into it. Every song seems it was written about or for me. I like listening to all kind of music. Classical, opera, alternative, metal, grunge, pop, country, techno, folk, and even started loving rap during my last manic episode. Pumped up Kicks by foster the people is a go-to favorite of mine when manic.

When I'm really depressed, I even lose my love for music. I just don't care about anything. During mild depressions I find that I prefer non-happy music too. I listen to things like nirvana, pearl jam, counting crows, tesla, blind Mellon, candlebox.....nothing too heavy but not happy/sappy either.

I love music!

I listen to all types: hard rock, pop, country, etc.

I find Sikh music very uplifting always, especially Snatum Kaur.
I enjoy Gregorian chants, Sufi chants and more.

I actually listen to depressing music when I am depressed.
Maybe it's not depressing music, but mellow stuff like Enya. I feel it rips at my emotions even more and really allows me to feel. At other times I think it is like adding salt to a wound.

I totally am with you on this one. I listen to a lot of 80s and early 90s music since that is the generation I grew up in.

Manic, metal, reggaeton.
Baseline if that exists for me, Chicago & Co. Raggae.
Depressed, Country music depresses me more, and that's what I seek.

Music for me helps keep me grounded, especially when I'm going through periods where nothing seems real. But as for my mood, it acts as a way to externalize what my mood is, angry music will be used for both mood states of mixed episodes. More upswings I listen to happier music and more depression I'll listen to sadder/angrier songs. I don't have any specific playlists based on my moods, only genres or bands.

I always listen to happy music. Even when depressed. I hate depressing music. I listen to either happy or beautiful music, regardless of mood.

It's funny that when we are depressed, we want to listen to depressing music.

IDK how you do it... happy music literally makes me want to die when I'm depressed. It exacerbates the depression..

You should try listening to angry music

ah yeah... That "Happy" song slowly kills me inside... It's the epitome of happy music for me

It's soul sucking. I can't stand it when depressed

I think it's because we can relate to those songs on an emotional level, or at least that's the case with me. That's basically why I enjoy listening to angry music too when I'm depressed, as I tend to be "angry". (Angry music = metal.)

It's just "happy" music that pisses me off when depressed.

When I went through a recent manic state, I listened to "Dream Brother" by Jeff Buckley about 60 times in a row as I walked back and forth across a stretch of land. I literally felt each part, each instrument, each note, each chord...when I go through manias I seem to seek out music in a very intense way.
